In writing up (lie County as 1 found wnat its oossibihties arily have to draw history of San Pete, it, and as it is. and are. 1 shall necessfrom my own observations and personal experience to a very great extent and hereby ask the indulgence of the ci ideal reader if 1 use that much abused personal pronoun "1 muie than is deemed pioper or than is in keeping with the prupnetois Pioneeis were sent into San Pete county, in the early tunes of the settling of Ctah, and as this article is not to assume a biographical natuie, 1 will simply state that such men and women wcie sent here as were formerly numbered with the saints at the gieat exodus 011646 They were men and women, pried and true. The writer of this aiticle arrived 11 tne valley of the Great Salt Lake m the summer of ib6o, and having been invited by friends, to make a visit to the "granary of the Lord,w Inch appellation I lound had been given to San i'ete valley, 1 visited tile county in the summer of 1662 Proceeding up the Salt Creek Canvon, reached the summit of the "div de" 111 due time, where a part of the beautiful valley buist, as it were, upon my view in ail its splendor of green. It was a lovely sight to view her broad meadows and golden grain scintillating in the summer breeze, her extended hay fields undulating to the motion of the wind. Thus had natuie clothed this beautiful valley in verdure and gold, as far as the eye could leach; but I noticed, on neater approach to the settlements, that tlieie was an absent appearance to gardens, and house surround ngs. which I soon discovered arose from the of orchards and ornamental tiees, so exquisite to the beauty and comfort of the rural districts. The only exception to the rule, being here and there a stunted apple tree that some farmer 01 gardner, more sanguine of San Iete ft uit growing adaptibihty than his neighboi had ventuied to bring from a distance and plant. Tins was about the sum-totof ttee planting m San Pete in 1S62. I talked with many of the citizens ol the county upon the subject of fruit growing; but few entertained hopes of this valley producing any tin g like a variety. Tins was the condition of San Pete as I found it. I again visited the county twelve yeais after, and found that the many changes was in notable in Utah, place taking San Pete. .Many orchatds had spiung. as it were, into existence, bearing an almost endless variety of apnles of an excellent variety; and in fact J believe that after the apple tree has become acclimated to this once steril evalley, the apple will become natural to its growth. Added to apples, aie plums, peaches, appricots slid pears, and some of these in almost endless variety. Although the growth and maturity of the peach m this valley, is with many, a matter of doubt; but I will here state that I had the pleasure of seeing and testing a most excellent variety of peach, that was grown in San Pete valley in the year, (1S6S) hich proves to me that the cultivation of that delicious fruit here is certain to become a success. Apricots are destined to become another of San Petes delicacies as witness;notwithstandmg the severe frosts of the spring. The writer lias two apricot trees which bore tile test of last years frosts and weie well freighted with fruit whose cheeks were sullused with the blush of their own lovimess. Thus as the trees and shrubbery of tliis valley are becoming acclimated, they are carrying with them the proof of their productiveness. The Indian War, with its destructive advance which occurred along between d much to retard the growth and prosperity of this valley. The savages driving off the horses and cattle; which is the farmers wealth, and as 1 verily believe, threw the county back, both in form of improvements and tree culture from three to five years. But, notwithstanding this draw-bacor hinderance, our county is on the eve of a decided boom. Her condition today is such, taking in view her present prospects of bountiful crops, both ol fruit and cerials, her granaries and cellars will soon be bursting with the abundance of the gifts ol God. All we slial want then, is for some ot our wise men to to step to the Mont, and form such an organization as a t handle and place these blessings lor and to the use of the producers. That Sail f ete is fast becoming all that man could in reason desire, both in the production of the soil, machinery commerce and trade.there is no longer a doubt in the nnhds of the brilliant. She is producing many suculant roots, plants and fruits that the most sanguin of her early settlers did not entertain a hope d of, in the near future, even the can coma within her borders and sociate and be happy. What aie the resulted ol these prophecies in San Fete valley, and vvliat aie the results throughout the valleys of the mountain-- ? Manti. the first settled place in San Fete, encountered many dillieulties; not the least of which was the continual vigilence necessaiv to he exercised, to guatd against Indian depredations, and by her strict dealings with them made it possible for other settlements to be the proud made, She stands piomer city of San I ete, and is second to none in point of wealth and prosperity. The settlers ol Ephraim amounted 111 number to about a half dozen husbandmen, who dared not enlarge the number ot the camp on account of the smallness of the stream of water that wended its way from the mouth of the canon, hall aliaid half doubtful, lest the scotching sun should consume it ete it reached its destination, .but "Presto! Once while attending a meeting ol the Priesthood, in the old tabernacle bait Lake City, Prest, B. Young while speaking ol the future ol Zion, lemaiked that some of the men then piesent, would live to see the city of Salt Lake extended from the point of the mountain at the south end of the valley, to Davs county at the north, that the load leading from the point of the mountain Unougli Salt Lake City, and into Davis county, would be well lined with business houses, engaged in all maimer of trade or commerce. This 1 believed, and conversed with the Irest alterwaids, and gleaned from him facts and theories winch have been to me, ever since meet for retlect ion, His theory was, that these gieat le suits would he In ought about by a vast system of reset vo.rs, which would be s constructed in the heads of the leading from the mountaiiis..Mil-lion- s of dollais will yet t e expended in Zion, in this magnanamous enlei prise The vast oceans of water tli at now cources its way down the canons m the spi ing, winter and fall, to find its level 111 the Lakes, and evaporate and take its course again to the cloud-cappe- d lulls, will be husbanded in large reservoirs, and every bench every valley, and every level spot on the mountain-sid- e and hills, every concievable place that water can reach will be recipients ol this hoarded water. Now I wish to cotrvey to the mind of the reader of ttus article, how veiy applicable this system of watering and sav-m- g of water is to Sanpete Valley. There ate three or four natural reservoirs, at the head of. and along in delta's of converging streams, forming the head of Canyon. or levy thrown up, across A high-waneck of those naturally-the balloon-shapeformed basins, a sufficiency of water can be hoarded, to irrigate every foot of arable land within the radius, or accest-bl- e to the canyon. These natural reservoirs I am creditably informed can be found at the head of every canyon in Sanpete Valleys vicinity, in shapes more or less completed by Natures hand.
