Show A8 Th Magna Time, West Valley Newt & Kearns Pott, October 17, 2002 Lifestyles - Making family memories while reviewing the past By STARR CAMPBELL SUIT Writer The make up of a family is a very interesting thing. It is not necessarily dictat- ed by bloodlines or marriage vows. Garth Brooks has a song out right now that says "Blood is thicker than water but love is thicker than blood". Your family may consist of just you and your children, you and your parents, several generations living together, or maybe its just group of people who share a closeness with one another. Remember in the Tigger movie when Tigger finally realized that Pooh. Eeyore, Owl, Piglet, Roo, Rabbit and Kanga were his family. You did know that was family history movie didn't you? It is important not only in the month of October, but all year to connect with those people who mean the most to you and share your lives together. Most families have "family folklore". Some of these stories are still pretty accurate but others have been exaggerated over the years. Kind of like that game you play where you whisper in someone ear and it goes around the group and when the last person repeats it, it is completely different from what the first person said. My children doubted that my mother and her parents had been part of a group that had an experience with Bonnie and Clyde. I am trying to convince my mother that a good It's very interesting to see what has survived the generations. We have a -Bible that my great grandmother brought from Germany, along with dishes and even a few clothes that came from England. I even have my dad's baby dress. Yes I said my dad's baby dress. Sometimes the heirlooms from a family can tell a lot about their social and economic positions at the time. Some families have a lot and some have very little. If possible show your children or grandchildren where you grew up. I have a nephew still living in the little town in Kansas where I grew up. We make it back there about every two years or so. When we were there for my nephews wedding my Keeping family journals and histories help to build strong family ties and is an activson was making comments ity being encouraged during Salt Lake Countys Octobers Family History Month. about being in a "Hick" town. I think I may be winning her over. This may be a good time to pull out the old photos, home movies, and old letters and just spend some time alone with your memories of these people. Finding a picture of yourself or your parents when you were teenagers and showing them to your teenagers is always good for some laughs. If any of you were a child of the 60's you all could even be dressed the same. My kids do laugh at the clothes, and the hairstyles, but my son loves to see the cars my friends drove. Just be careful what you tell them about your teenage years. Telling them you used to drag race on in Denver might not be such a good idea while ' teaching them to be a responsible driver. A closeness can be established when they realize that not only wereyou a teenager, but at one time you too thought 30 was really old. , Most important is just to spend time together. . Talk to your family . about their dreams, thdi wishes and their thoughts on not only the past but the future too. You may find ' out you have more in com- -' mon than you thought, after all if they are part of "your" family they can't be v all bad. ld We will move walls and modify plans at no charge BANGERTDL COMMUNITIES: 3rd generation Utah homebuilders L HUNTER VILLAGE k V ;!
