Wells Fargo was founded as a banking and express compnay on March 1 8, 1852 on Wall Street in New York City. Its first office opened on the waterfront of Gold Rush San Fransisco on July 13, 1852, the site of the company's current headquarters. Wells Fargo Utah stores will celebrate the 150th anniversary during the week of March 18 by decorating stores. Children are encouraged to participate in a coloring contest offered at Wells Fargo Utah stores. Each store will give away a total of $150 in U.S. savings bonds and select a winner in a drawing for the age groups 4 years, 7 years, and years. "This year is a special one for our company, Utah, and the West We invite the Utah community to celebrate with us," said Robert A. Hatch, Wells Fargo president and CEO for Utah and southwest Wyoming. "In keeping with our rich history of serving and connecting cus tomers, we look forward to serving our customers and our for generations to come." Wells Fargo's history in Utah dates back almost to its founding in 1852 by Henry Wells and William Fargo, who created the company to meet customers' express and banking business needs as gold fever created commerce in California. Messenger Frank Gilbert first brought Wells Fargo express service to Salt Lake City, delivering mail and packages to settlers along the 1 com-munti- es way. By 1861, express shipments arrived by stage, and from April to October 1861, Wells Fargo assumed operation of the famed Pony Express west of Salt Lake City. During the Civil War, the Overland Mail Company, financed and managed by Wells Fargo, relocated its stages carrying passenger mail and express 2-- 5-- 8-- . , . From their Salt Lake City hub. Wells Fargo stagecoaches rolled across the West, from Nebraska to California, and into die mining regions of Idaho, Montana and Colorado. After the joining of the transcontinental railroad tracks at Promontory, Utah in May, 1869, Wells Fargo messengers road the rails, heralding an end to the West's greatest stagecoaching empire. Wells Fargo sold off its repair shops and stables in Salt Lake City to Brigham Young. Without its ability to respond to customer and business needs. Wells Fargo could have disappeared during several points in the company's history. "With the start of die transcontinental railroad in 1 869, Wells Fargo let go of its beloved stagecoach in favor of moving its business and its customers' business to the new technology of the railroad," said Dr. Andy Anderson, Wells dawned on Wells Fargo that it wasn't a stagecoach company any more, it was, and still is today, a connecting company." From 1865 to 1905, Wells Fargo maintained a profitable bank branch in Salt Lake. As a part of a larger corporate reorganization act in 1905, Wells Fargo sold its Salt Lake bank to Walker Brothers Bank, another pioneer enterprise which began as a general merchandise store in 1 859 and entered the banking business in 1871. For many years. Wells Fargo maintained a working correspondent relationship with Walker Brothers Bank to handle interstate banking network, and ultimately became part of First Interstate bank. By the early 1900s, Wells Fargo had 10,000 offices across the country and its slogan was "Ocean to Ocean." During World War L the U.S. government consolidated all the company's offices and Wells Fargo was reduced to one bank in San Fransisco with 80 team Kovacevich. 'From stagecoaches that went five miles an hour to Internet banking thafs done 30,000 miles per second. Wells Fargo has continually adapeted new technology and a better way of doing business to save customers time and money." From community banks to mortgage and consumer finance companies, from the investment and securites companies to insurance and trust companies and more, the Wells Fargo story is one of growth and financial interconnections of small-tow- n America. "The key to the companys success is the commitment to people," said Kovacevich. 'From a stagecoach to modem technology, we've had the same 'equipment1 as our competitors. We have grown and prospered for 1 50 years because we have been blessed with very talented people who have always focused on customers and have become leaders in their communities. We look forward to he next 150 years with great anticipation. It's going to be a great ride." Wells Fargo returned to its roots of connecting one market to another and its customers to die "Next Stage" of their financial success. Through acquisitions and diversification beyond traditional banking, Wells Fargo today is the result of more than 2,000 mergers and acquisitions across the U.S., Canada and Wells Latin America. In Utah returned to uniting Fargo with First Interstate Bank, and 1998 witnessed the merger of equals between Minneapolis-baseNorwest Corporation and San Fransisco based Wells Fargo. Norwest changed its name to Wells Fargo and moved its corporate headquarters to San Fransisco. In October 2000, Wells Fargo merged with First 19, d Security Corp. "Given the number of longtime companies and brands that are struggling or no longer in existence today. Wells Fargo has shown a remarkable ability to reinvent itself to respond to customers' changing needs," said Wells Fargo Chairman and CEO Dick once-popu-l- ar Business Directory advertising, call place To your 250-565- o $ Plumbing won't work?
