Show 4 The Magna TimesWest Valley News, Thursday, June 8, 2000 Sports Babe Ruth Pennant Race heats up by S. DEAN LEDBETTER STAFF WRITER Sometimes when you look into his eyes, you get the feeling someone else is driving . -- People are crazy, don't you think? They do dumb things, and make the rest of us wonder where theyre coming from. I'm sure you agree that everyone else is a little odd, except you and me. I worry about you a little too. here are some of the folks that I think are especially crazy: Greg Ostertag is c:a?y if he thinks he is worth six million a year, or half of that. He is nuts if he thinks he can be successful while going in second gear. Why does he think that a hand transplant will solve his problems? Bryon Russell is crazy if he thinks the Portland fans were shaking the basket when he was missing those free throws. Have you ever tried to move one of those standards? They are sorta like moving a sequoia tree, and again all basketball officials are a little dizzy. Bobby Knight is crazy, if he thinks his troubles are over at Indiana. Every frustrated ex player will come up with some accusation. He is also crazy, if he thinks he can choke people and bump heads with them, and get away with it. Your crazy, if you think the Jazz can win a championship without a center. Look at the four teams that are still playing. The centers are Erving, Smits, Sabonis.and Shaq; four of the best. Utah couldnt match up if polinice plated on Ostertags shoulders. You just cant play good basketball with our a center. Thats what Greg Foster told me. I know. Im not crazy. The championship pennant race has heated up as the 2000 Hunter Cyprus Babe Ruth Baseball League enters the final David Letterman Your crazy if you think any big league baseball player will hit seventy home runs this season. Even if the ball is juiced. Too many reasons not to. Players get hurt, pitchers will pitch around McGuire and Sosa and other pretenders. Your crazy, if you think other wise. If anyone hits seventy. Ill buy you a popsidc. Your really nuts if you think John Elways beer commercial is going to effect me in anyway, he calls himself and original and pushes for original Coors. Your crazy, if you think that will get me to drink beer. The man has only won three super bowls, which isnt any reason to buy a six pack, or even a draft. If you fall for that kind of commercial, you must really be crazy. could be wrong, but hasnt the fine line between sanity and madness gotten finer? As Samuel Beckett said, We are all bom and some remain so. Your crazy, if you read this column every week. What's to be gained? A little wisdom here, and some sense of sanity there; a few great insights. What else, wake up, and know that work and lover are the basics. Every thing else is mythology. Madsen, Hardy split double main at RMR on Saturday After a week break, the drivers of the PPG Modified Series returned to action at Rocky Mountain Raceways Saturday. The week's rest paid off as they put on a show for the fans during a double main event. In the end, though, both mains came down to two drivers Gary Madsen and Lynn Hardy. Madsen was strong all night. He opened the night with a win in the trophy dash. He followed that up with a win and a runner-u- p finish in the main events. The win came during the first main. Madsen started 13th in the 20-cfield. He steadily worked his way through traffic. Madsen broke into the top five on lap six. Madsen moved into second on lap 17 after second place Roger Wilson got into the back of leader Jim Eaton. Both cars spun. Eaton was given his spot back while Wilson was sent to the back of the pack for causing the accident. That put Madsen on Eatons bumper, which was all he ar needed. Following the restart, Madsen got around Eaton for the lead. He led to the finish, crossing the line about 4.20 seconds ahead of Hardy, Eaton, Michael Hale and Ron Moser. In the second main event, Madsen would have to settle for second behind Hardy. Madsen and Hardy started the mam event near the back of the 19-cfield. Madsen started 12th while Hardy staged 16th. Early on, the battle at the front was between the cars of Jim Cooksey and Patrick Vogel. As those two battled for the lead, Madsen and Hardy worked through the field, hardy was able to get through quicker. He jumped into the top five on lap 13 and then worked into second on lap 20. It was only a matter of time before he would get to the front. On the following lap, Hardy jumped next to Cooksey on the back stretched then took the lead coming out of turn four, he would lead to the finish, but it wouldnt be an easy ride to the victory. Madsen had also worked his way through traffic by this time and he followed Hardy around Cooksey on lap 22. He would stay on the back bumper of hardy. Madsen took several looks to the inside of Hardy, but he couldnt make them stick. Hardy crossed the line about a quarter of a second ahead of Madsen, Hale Cooksey, and Vogel. In other action, Tony Walters win put an end to the four-rac- e streak of James Burman Jr. in the Aire Tech Super Stocks. Walters took the lead from Stanley Webster on lap 13 of 25 and held off the rest of the pack to pick up his first win of 2000. He crossed the line 1.47 seconds ahead of Dennis Tomas, Burman, Gregory Young and Nick Parker. Burman and Webster won the heat races while Parker won the trophy dash. Clint Kidd topped the field in the Maverik Late Models main event. Brett Thompson, Russell Butler, Gary Porter and Don Beamis rounded out the top five. Beamis won a heat race and the trophy dash. Rick Ellison won the other heat race. M.chael Schultz held off the field in the Legends main event. He was followed by Doyle Olsen, Jeff Kelley, Josh Crook, and Brandon Burton. Schultz also won a heat race while Olsen won the other heat race and the trophy dash. Nathan Christensen picked up the win in the AIS Super Mini Cup main event. He followed by Michael Laing, Allen Mathis, Dave Adamson and Ron Binstock. Christensen also won the trophy dash while Laing won the heat w to eliminate the ups and downs of budgeting race. Were happy with the win," commented Head Coach Chris Agnello, but having nearly two week off definitely affected our play. We had several great opportunities in the first half that we could not finish. That gave the Zephyrs some confidence. Also, the one defensive breakdown in the second half allowed the Zephyrs to score their second goal which allowed them to stay in the game. The Blitzz goals were scored by Rob Karas on a penalty kick in the thirty-fourt- h minute. B.J.
