The Sandy City Amphitheater, located on the comer of 9400 South and 1300 East in Sandy, opened its doors on August 231999, and has already featured many of the more prominent local, as well as national performers. Support for this new venue has been phenomenal. In an Awards Ceremony held on March 27th at Sandy City Hall, the Sandy Amphitheater was acknowledged as the Most Outstanding Municipal Facility in the State of Utah for the Year 2000 by Utah Recreation and Parks Associations local chapter of National Recreation and Parks Association. On April 7th in another Awards Ceremony held at Sandy City Hall, honor was given to Eaton Mahoney Associates, the architectural firm responsible for the programming and design of this beautiful masterpiece, as Architect of the Year for 1999 by Sandy Citys Mayor Tom Dolan. In attendance to receive this sward was Robert J. Eaton, I, and Donald J. Mahoney, AIA, Principals of Eaton Mahoney Associates. Also in attendance were Mayor Dolans involved staff members; Recreation and Parks Director, Nancy Shay; and various involved City Council members. It was through the concerted efforts of the Sandy City Arts Council, the Mayor, and city government leadership that resulted in bringing to their City this Award Winning Performing Arts Facility. The Sandy Amphitheater offers a full size stage, stage rigging system, a dock area, upper level storage, dressing rooms, etc. The building is constructed of masonry and steel frame with a natural copper finish on the overhang. The masonry has been articulated to reflect the context of the adjacent buildings. The impeccable landscape designed by Brent Morris Associates took advantage of the natural slope to the west and south by constructing berms mitigate noise levels from the busy streets and intersections adjacent to the proposed site configuration of the pathway fiom the parking to the Amphitheater provides a transition both physically and emotionally for the patron, and reflects the prominent Sandy City terrain features of winding canyons and alluvial plains. Planned for late summer is the addition of 400 fixed seats to be in incorporated into the sloped grass area, which will provide more patrons with opportunities to enjoy the summer schedule of events. Total seating capacity will include 900 fixed seats, and slope lawn seating for another 500 patrons. The summer season runs from May through September with ticket prices ranging from $8 to $18.
