Show s ports Thursday. October 7. 1982Mogna Tlmas-Pag- 3 a Brockbank - CHS news: (Serendipity Jports by ! Dale Simons HOME I want to go home Please let me go home I feel so bad. Im beat, I wanna go Home. New Refrain There is nothing, absolutely nothing that compares with playing in your own gym or on your own field. The other school may have better turf or nicer showers, but there are few if any athletes who like to go on the road to play a game. There is something kinda nice about trotting out of your own locker room to compete, that beats a bus ride every time. You can say it any way you want to, but you and I both know that playing before the home folks is where its at. Why, the fight song at the insane asylum even hints at wanting to go back home to play one last game on the old home field. It goes like this: Going home, going home . ' Im just going home Over there, Its not far Thru an open door The baseball player likes to play at home so he can bat last and because he knows where all the bad hops are. The football player likes to be on the home field where he is familiar with the fans, the cheerleaders, and the Pep Club. The basketball player loves the friendly confines of his own sweet smelling symnasium cause he knows where the loose boards are and which side of the rim is dead. Remember the old Grantsville gym where the outside doors opened right under the basket. If you got going too fast on a driving lay up, you could end up outside in a snow bank. It was also in the Grantsville gymnasium that the balcony hung over the floor, and if you shot from the deep comer, you could have your jumper blocked by the balcony. Talk about home court advantage. The gym with the greatest home court advantage I have ever see was the old Blaine School at thirty third South and Main Street. It was there that the fans all sat on the stage behind the west basket. The basket supports had ropes tied to them and whenever the visiting team would shoot, the student body bad guys would pull on the ropes and make the basket shake. We always had poor shooting percentages, when we played at Blaine. It was tough to shoot a free throw when the rim of the basket was shivering like a dog passing peach stones. No wonder the home team wins so often. No wonder every player likes to stay at home to play. Even though travel is broadening, it is also harmful to the won lost record and will often cause many a good well coached team to go down to bitter defeat. So, if you get the urge to take your team on the road remeber the words of that great song: Im going to Ranger or maybe to Judd cause I wanta see for myself, those far away places I been reading about in a book, that I took, from the shelf. Hie team that your coaching, the team of your dreams is good, if you keep them at home, but beware, if you travel, you may even lose away from your own sandy loam. My advice is to play at home every chance you get. Dont get a driver dont get a bus .Stay home and be thankful. SIMONS SAYS: We should all be like the team from the point of the mountain, and day all of our games at home. needed to help PTA VoDuurrteers By KIM DA YBELL Brockbank Jr. High Volunteers are needed to help make Brockbank a success. She falls in love with the country and a darling Spaniard, Alejandro. On the very morning of their wedding, the violence of the Spanish Civil War separates them. In bitterness, Emily returns to Ireland, and she slowly learns to care, trust and finally to love again. The story of Emilys growing maturity and her involvement with the three very different men who reach for her love is set against the tumulous background of Europe during the thirties and forties. The Hearts Speaks Many Ways, by Madelaine Polland, is part love story, part Irish family saga, and entirely entertaining reading. Danielle Steel has written another best seller! Crossings is a romantic story set in the years before and during World War II. Liane and her husband, Armand, the French ambassador to the United States, return to France on a luxury liner where they meet Nick and Hillary Burnham. Nick and Liane begin a friendship that blossoms into something more in the next few years. Steel fans will love this one, and it should be as popular as her previous novels. Speak up with confidence is a practical and entertaining book that is aimed at layman and professional alike. The author, Jack Valenti, is the n and popular president of the Motion Picture Association of e America and speech writer for President Johnson. Safety at Halloween has come a high priority for all parents. Masks that slide around a childs face may often prohibit a child from seeing a car coming or another type of danger, such as a post or fence. Halloween make-u- p now is very inexpensive and much safer for little goblins and witches. The Trick or Treat children, young people and adults will be taught how to apply attractive masks on their own faces as Magna Library presents Halloween makeup and Safety at the library on Saturday, October 9 at 11 a.m. v See you at the library !
