Show 4 Poq Tlms-Thursdoy- Jun h 3, Iff SPORTS (Serendipity yPrtS by : Dale Simons I By DALE SIMONS Blood Wounded I am but not yet slain 111 Just lie down and bleed awhile and then Til rise and fight again As it is written in the book of Leviticus, The life of the flesh is in the blood. So is it also written in the book of Hag that successful athlete have to bleed a little if their going to excell at their game. Some people call it dedication, some label it committment, but Tran LaSorda, the Dodger Skipper, said it best when he said, If you want to be successful Dodger, you got to work until you bleed, and when you bleed you gotta bleed Dodger blue. Hiatts just a descriptive way of saying you have to love your foam enough" to give some blood for them. You have to pl8y with a little pain. You have to hang in there when your hurtin some, and if blood letting is required, you have to allow a few drops to flow . You cannot give up everytime you get a hangnail. What am I talking about? Ill try to put it in plainer terms so you can get the gist of what Im saying. You have to burn deep inside and its got to mean everything to you. You have to be married to it so to speak. It's got to be your love, your life and yes, your blood. If youre a baseball player, you need to slide head first sometimes and not be afraid to lose a little skin when youre sliding. If winning demands "A pound of flesh, then give It. So you get a big strawberry on your Well, tape an aspirin to it and lets keep going till we win. In the great contact game of football, it is sometimes necessary to let some plasma and hemoglobin splash oo the turf, if youre going to be a real player. Thne gridder who has never hafd any blood in his mouth doesnt really understand the game and the way it ought to be played. In sports, The timid soul will find it hard to get very far up the ladder of success and unless he is willing to let a few drops of blue blood flow, he will probably fail. Athletic prowess requires blood, sweat and tears and the least of these is not blood. I have known a couple of baseball players who were willing to step in front of a pitchers fast ball to become a base runner so their team could win. Basketball players are taught to bold their ground and take the charge," while they eat elbows and knees with their chest and belly button. Football players have a to fill holes with their head and be willing to sacrifice their bodies for the teams well being. I read once about a great man who sacrificed his body and allowed his blood to flow from his pores so that his teamates could taste of victory . Simon Says : There was blood on the saddle blood all around, and a great big middle of hlond nn th orraiiw) A h. Does regular exercise really pay off in the long run? By DALEO. NELSON', Professor Health, Physical Education and Recreation Utah Slate University The question of whether regular exercise really pays off in the long run is one that continues to intrigue both medical and exercise scientists. This is not to overlook the concern of those who walk, jog. hike, cycle, ski, swim, and sweat in the hope that such activity will lessen their chances of a heart attack. Most of us are convinced cardiovascular exercise in some form which elevates the pulse in a sustained fashion on a regular basis will reduce the risk of heart disease. Granted, we dont have all of the data needed for proof, but there is much more to it than improved quality of living for the present. There is now a considerable amount of population study data to support our position. OUR FRIENDS THE MONKEYS Even though animal studies are somewhat confusing, it is difficult to ignore rebent research on our kinfolk, the monkeys Even though animal studies are somewhat confusing, it is difficult to ignore recent research on our kinfolk, the monkeys. Dr. Dieter M. Kramsch, at Boston University Medical Center separated 27 Macque monkeys into three groups of nine and followed them for three years. One group ate a diet low in cholesterol and remained sedentary. A second group was also sedentary, but ate a diet high in cholesterol. A third group ate a diet rich in cholesterol, but exercised on a treadmill for one hour three times a week at speeds equivalent to jogging for humans. EXERCISE PAID OFF As you might expect, the exercised monkeys resting heart rates were much lower than the two sedentary groups. Only the sedentary monkeys had ECG abnormalities suggesting their hearts were not getting enough oxygen. The exercising monkeys, even though on high cholesterol diets, retained normal electrocardiogram readings. WHATIT MEANS The editorial accompanying the report in the New England Journal of Medicine said. Relevant observations made over years provided provocative and objective evidence that may support the protective value of periodic and regularly maintained moderate physical activity. 3-- atheroMtaMris. High cholesterol diets for longer periods than three years may be more lethal, even for the exerciser. Regardless of the preliminary One thing K does not necessarily aspects of the study, it should be a mean is thht (fyalphigh in cholesterol strong signal to all of us that exercise are safe as long as you exercise. W e do holds out a promise of more than a not know how early in life exercise healthier life for the present. So keep be must to started retard exercising. Drawing of slain officer available By DAVID K. RICE Hie Nevada Fish and Game Wardens Protective Association has donated a limited edition print of a pen and ink drawing created by William Pogue to the State Board of Wildlife Commissioners in memory of the former Idaho Fish and Game Conservation Officer and artist who was slain in the line of duty January 1961. Pogue, and fellow officer Conley Elms were slain while investigating complaints of deer and bobcat trapping in the vicinity of the south fork of the Owyhee River in Idaho. Claude L. Dallas is presently awaiting trial in Idaho for the murders of the two men. Pogue was formerly a warden with the then Nevada Fish and Game Commission and also served as chief of police in Winnemucca. Limited lithographic reproductions of Pogues s drawing of a mountain man in the typical dress of the day was authorized by his widow to fund a reward program for the recovery of his body. Conley Elms body was recovered shortly after the murders; however, the location of Pogues body remains a mystery after continuing attempts of at location. The original pen and ink was by Bill Pogue in 1976, and clearly depicts the artist's great talent. The framed print and engraved brass memory plaque will be displayed in the Wildlife Commissions meeting room at Nevada Department of Wildlifes Reno office. The presentation was made by Fish and Game Wardens Bill Fitzmorris, Gardnerville, and Rick Davidsaer, Winnemucca, who represented the Wardens Protective Association. Commission Chairman, Marv Einer-wol- d of Las Vegas accepted the print for the board. seven-memb- er STATEWIDE: CANCER AnswerUine American Cancer Society with the consumption of alcohol have also been linked to esophageal cancer.
