The joys of parenthood when school is dismissed for the summer. We have a summer reading session starting the first of June, and many interesting programs for children will be held every week. Dorothy Edens new book arrived this week. An Important For Family. this masterful story of an aristocratic family pioneering amidst the barren beauty erf New Zealand mountains, the author returns to her own roots and shares the adventures of strong-wille- d Kate OConnor. Kate is engaged by Sir John Devenish to go with his family to the Canterbury Colonies, and it is here that Kate begins to perceive the dark mystery that clouds the Devenish family. An An Important Family, the author will again enthrall her readers with a superbly realistic setting, good storytelling and unforgettable characters. Like her earlier novel. The Vines of Yarrabee, this is a magnificent story from the world down under in which Dorothy Eden was born and grew up, and truly understands. A popular saga of passion, loss, tragic endings and glorious new beginnings, Eden Rising is a splendid complement to the four novels which have preceded it. Moving from the black and stormy battlements of great mansions to the compassionate chambers of houses of mercy, Eden Rising, by Marilyn Hanis, follows the tempestuous stations of aristocrat John Murrey Edens perilous path through sin and privation of redemption and the peace that only love can bring. Jacqueline Briskins Onyx is the story of Tom Bridgers dream. Born in the desolate farmlands of the Midwest, he went to Detroit as the century timed, determined to make his dream a reality. An uneducated genius with an uncanny knack for mechanics, he was propelled on against impossible odds to succeed with his great automobile, the Onyx ; but success has its price. Once again Briskin has triumphed in an epic novel that spans two continents, three generations and five turbulent decades. This is a story of love dishonorably denied and scandalously reclaimed, of a pride and a passion that carried within them the seeds of destruction, and a colossal empire that pits brother against brother and father against son. This novel will remain in the readers memory and imagination. See you at the library ! New rules for food stamps MAGNA STAKE NEW members: Ben (arnin McCumber, and Estella Meza with their Fathers. The eight year olds were Estella Meza, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Meza and Benjamin McCumber son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas McCumber, both were baptized by their fathers and are members of the Pleasant Green Third Ward. The service generally held on the first Sunday of each month was moved up due to plans for Stake Conference June 5 and 6. Prepare car for trips With reduced gasoline prices, indications are that automobile vacations will be on the upswing this year. Information Automotive The Council (AIC) advises motorists to prepare for a trip with a vehicle checkup. Proper attention to the basics can prevent trouble on the road, which often happens at an inconvenient time or location, or both. AIC advises checking the cars maintenance schedule to determine whether its time for a tune up, oil change, lubrication, air filter, or some service which might have been overlooked. Check all the fluid levels brake fluid, engine oik- - radiator coolant, battery water, transmission fluid and the windshield washer container. Look at the hoses and belts. Belts should have less than give under thumb pressure. If any belts or hoses look soft, frayed or cradced, have them replaced. Look for any rusty hose damps and any loose wiring. Inspect the tires. If a tire fails on the road you probably wont have a chance to shop for the brand you want at a price you want. Check the tire pressure, induding the spare. Improper pressure can shorten tire life and lead to premature failure. The pressure can be checked with a pencil-typ- e gauge which can be or two. Keep it dollar for a purchased in the glove box for convenient use. Underinflated tires also increase rolling resistance and thereby fuel consumption. Make sure all the lights work and dont forget to check the wiper blades. Worn blades will do little good if you Ye caught in a downpour. Pay attention to the brakes and steering and have them in good shape before starting the trip. Proper maintenance, says AIC, could save your vacation. The second set of rules on wage matching is a proposal that will require all states to match food stamp partidpants wage data with UC agendes quarterly, and or SSA semiannually. This proposal is based on the 1981 Farm Bill passed last December. Information resulting from matching the data through computers would be used to verify a household's eligibility for food stamps and establish the proper amount of the benefits. Wage matching would identify those households that receive benefits to which they are not entitled and, by aiding the dvil and criminal prosecution, would also prevent error and abuse. Comments on the proposal should be sent by July 6 to: Thomas OConnor, supervisor, policy and regulations section, program Standards branch, program development division. WASHINGTON In an ongoing effort to protect the integrity of the food stamp program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued two separate sets of rules that enable states to match wage data on food stamp applications with unemployment compensation (UC) and Sotial Security (SSA) records. The first set implements a law to allow wage matching as an option, and the second set is a proposal to make wage matching a requirement. The incentives to report earnings and benefit payments accurately in filling out application forms should increase substantially once redpients realize computer matching will disdose earnings and benefits information. said Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Mary C. Jarratt. The first set of rules implemented provisions of the 1980 Amendments to the Food Stamp Act of 1977. It allows state agendes access to SSA data on food stamp partidpants wages and other income, if the state opts to use wage matching to deter fraud and abuse in the food stamp program.
