The proposals were revealed by General George C. Marshall, chief of staff, in a press conference. Previously, the War Department had recommended to President Roosevelt that the National Guard be retained in Federal service after one years training. Congress would have to authorize any extension of service by either the selectees or National Guard. Marshall said it would be necessary to hold some selectees, pro-- 1 bably a limited number, because they might be stationed in Alaska or other remote places, or might be needed in specialized units. We want the selectees to keep coming in but it will depend upon the actual situation at the time, he said. "If we don't need them, we will send them home, but, in all events, we need legislation.
