Start Writer As the Hunter Wolverines hosted the Box Elder Bees on Jan. 9, a closely fought, very physical game ensued. No one was sure what to expect Big Carl Swanigan controlled the tip for Hunter, and Patera Hang was the first to strike, with a deadly jump shot. Box Elder then drilled a three pointer, got the ball back and put in an inside lay- 11-1- 3. up. Hunter was struggling to nail its three point attempts, so Paul Beck hit a two point baseline jumper to bring the Wolverines to within one. Landon Jensen was fouled on the shot after Hunter got the ball back. He sunk both of his free throw's, and then Smmiiv Armstrong made one basket, w'hile Swanigan added four, including a feed that he got from Beck, who obviously traveled and got away with it, to end the first half down by only two points, Swanigan added another 8 points in the second half. 23-2- 5. If they had converted these opportunities, the story might have been different for the Bees. The Wolverines came aw'ay with the victory, as Box Elder barely missed a last second three point attempt off the front of the iron to tie the game, slowness Sw'anigans could be a Hunter weakness, but with speedy guys like Otis Nelson, Patera Hang, and Paul Beck around. Hunter can challenge any fast break. Not only is Nelson fast, he is very athletic, and plays well on both sides of the ball. In the fourth quarter, for example, he stole a rebound that Box Elder had pulled dowm, turned dround and made a left handed lay up from underneath the basket. Nelson, Hunter's high scorer for the night finished with 17 points. As regular season play begins this week. Michael Jackson has By STEVEN ROSE Staff Writer One word that best describes the meeting between the Granger Lancers and the Clearfield Falcons basketball varsity boys teams on Tuesday Jan. 6 is aggressive. Both teams came to play, and from start to finish the game was extremely fast-pace- d. In the first quarter, both teams shot high percentages and three pointers rebounded well. And despite leading 3 at halftime and keeping it close through the of 25-2- poor shooting. Granger had too many turnovers that came from sloppy passing and careless dribbling. Many d a times Clearfield guard, stole the ball from a Granger guard near mid court, to take it dowm and lay it in for two points. s Sometimes those were followed by a foul shot, and most often Clearfield made their foul shots, like at the end of the third quarter, to put Clearfield ahead Mulford, w'ho is a quick shooter that has the ability to third quarter. Granger gave the game away in the fourth. The main problem for Granger w'as that Mark Mulford w'as the only one who was really on the top of his game, and Clearfield had several players who shot well. Several of Grangers players scored, but most of them contributed few points. Abbel Aiono, for example, w'as Grangers second leading scorer for the night with a low four points. Mulford finished with 29. Besides most of the teams quick-hande- lay-up- 39-3- 2. Cyprus wresters doing well The Cyprus Wrestling team has been doing w'ell this year, due to the dedication and hard work of the athletes. Cyprus entered the Lancer Joust on Dec. 10 at Granger, edging out last years winner. Skyline, with a combined score of 158. After suffering a loss to last years region winners, Olympus, the team bounced back to defeat Kearns 51 to 26. Undefeated 103 lb. captain Tyler Howell led the team with a pin. Troy Munro, Dustin Hudson, Jake batty, Theron Whetstone, and captain Will Gamer also won by pins. Captain Kory Bright won by points. The next match against East High on Dec. 18 was also won by a score of year for the Cyprus wrestling said Coach Eddie team, Berrest. "After our loss to Olympus the team worked extra hard to come back w'ith two decisive victories. This show's the coaches just how hard these athletes are willing to work in order not to lose. Words cant describe the dedication our Wrestlers have. The team has a record of five wins with one loss. 51 to 18. The team was led again by captain Tyler How'ell, 103 lb. and captain Kory Bright, 1191b. Chris May 130 lb. Scott Robbins 160 lb. captain Will Gamer 215 lb. and H.W. Jake Caputo w'ho all.w'on by pins. Captain Adam Smith 140 lb. Jake Batty 145 lb. Brian Nelson 152 lb. and 152 lb. Brian Nelson won by points. "This has been a good take a pass off of one bounce, raise and put it in - nothing but net - made three pointers from all over the floor. It goes to show, though, that one man usually is not enough to make the difference in a team sport. Another problem that faced, though they Granger held their ground pretty well, was matching up against Clearfield in the middle. Clearfield didn't really have a dominating player, but they had guys that could get open, and passers that could get them the ball. Granger is working on this inside weakness, as senior center Michael Talbot has left the team (as mentioned in a Head previous article). coach Justin Nelson worked in junior center Garid Kristensen, carefully coaching his play. Kristensen did hit an inside jumper in the third quarter, much to coach But Nelsons delight. Clearfield w'on Despite all of its challenges throughout this preseason, Granger still plays with a lot of intensity and quickness. 60-4- High quality mufflers Complete brake service shocks Smooth-ridin- g A t struts Ask about the benefits of the Meineke' Credit Card STRUTS OIL & LUBE C.V.
