My parents were from Utah, and members of the Church of Latter Day Saints. My mother was young and single and she said my father was killed in an automobile accident before they were married. She was not able to tell her family that she was pregnant so she went to San Francisco, Ca. in April 1961. She stayed at a home for unwed mothers located at 850 Broderick St., San Francisco. She said she was returning to Utah after giving me up for adoption. She listed her address in Utah as 545 N. 6th East, Tremonton, though she may have been living in Logan and attending the university. According to the information supplied by my mother, she was born on July 7, 1940. Her father was born in Price in July 1915, and her mother was born in Logan in May 1915. She had a brother who was born in Jan. 1943 and he had suffered from a severe infection from a head wound when he was 10. The medical diagnosis was Nephritis. He was born in Salt Lake City. Her sister was born in Colorado in Aug. 1948. Her family was living in Provo in 1961. She said my father was killed in an accident on November 11, near-capaci- ty political career. Anyway, the is that if you wait too long, your bill may not have time to receive approval of both bodies and it will die on the board at the stroke of midnight on the last day of the ' session. Then you can start all over, from square one, next year. As a very smart person once said, Timing is everything! There IS a great deal of gamesmanship involved in being a successful legislator. Finally, from now until the start of the session, we are besieged by different agencies and special interest groups to meet with them to hear their issues that will be discussed in the session. These meetings are usually helpful and give a legislator, particularly a new legislator, an excellent opportunity to learn and understand some complex and difficult issues before the pressure of the session ' begins. I have some apprehension about accepting a large number of these breakfast, luncheon, and dinner invitations from these groups, so I have become quite selective in attending only those meetings that will give me serious information and education. In any case, it seems that the lobbyists are always willing to spend whatever time is necessary to give you the information you need when the session begins. Also, at this time and any other time, I am always delighted to hear from any of my constituents to discuss problems they might have with state government. If I cant solve your problem, I can put you in touch with people who can help. And if you have interest in particular legislation, I will be glad to discuss it with side-not- February. this time is that legislators must determine the timing for introduction of any legislation they intend to sponsor. The interesting side note to this is that bills introduced early in the session will normally be subjected to intense scrutiny, not only in committee hearings but also on the floor of both houses. If there is anything controversial about a bill, this microscopic examination can be very painful and often results in the bill being killed or receiving major modifications or amendments. Another option is to wait and submit a bill close tciie deadline date for submitting new legislation. This date occurs approximately three weeks into the session. Under this option, by the time the bill is prepared and ready for hearing, the committees are under such serious time constraints, they are often precluded from serious review. In addition, when -- . The Singer study applauded the theme-base- d approach, saying that the repetition of key ideas throughout the half hour helps children to understand and incorporate new ideas. Of course, there is the excitement of the impending legislative session. The session starts on the third Monday of January. You may recall that this was changed by a revision to the constitution passed in the last general election. Prior to this change, the session started on the second Monday of January. The change was requested by the legislature to allow more time at the . end of the session to react to the latest state revenue figures which are available approximately the second or third week ' 3. USPS Bangerter Highway was completed through the city, and 4100 South was widened to make it safer for our citizens and motorists. Other examples of outstanding achievement were the consolidation of the city's debt which resulted in several millions of dollars in savings; acquisition of Hercules to boost the citys tax base; creation and partial development of West Ridge Commerce Park, and the expansion of WestFest into an international festival. Mayor Anderson was also instrumental in bringing to the city a higher level of cultural arts with the organization of the West Valley Chorale and more recently the founding of the West Valley Symphony which recently played to a audience at Abravanel Hall. The spirit of cooperation supporting a unified effort of leadership have resulted in bringing many projects to fruition. So, our sincere thanks go out to Mayor Anderson, a man whose outstanding character and integrity have been a lighthouse to others navigating governmental waters. His personal integrity and emphasis on family values have helped to guide us in many of the most important chaileges of life. We, as a council, and all staff members of West Valley City wish you and your family the best in the future. We will continue many of the projects you have started.
