The more you talk about it, the more kids are going to play around with alcohol and drugs. Youre part of the problem you and the other so called spokesmen! If you would stop sensationalizing the problem, if you would stop putting the spotlight on kids who use, and if you would act more responsibly, the kids wouldnt be drawn into the alcohol and drugs scene. There will always be some use by the bad element in society, but as long as you make such a big deal about it, large numbers of good kids are going to be lured into the problem. So stop talking about it and it will die on its own. Get Off of It Dear Get Off: The only thing that will die on its own will be the kids! Unfortunately, your sentiments are shared by all too many. They are even shared by people in influential positions, both in the church and civic areas. But, both you and they are wrong. Those sentiments are completely unare based on lack of ex- founded and perience and denial of the current problems. And, what is even worse, the resulting actions, or lack of actions, serve to fuel the fire of ignorance and apathy across the country. Problems do not go away simply because we choose to ignore them. History is replete with examples of groups who met with disaster by using similar techniques. Its time to take a responsible stand and face the problem head on. We are being beaten by problems that continue to get worse:. .drunk driving fatalities,;' drug overdoses; suicides and loss'' of ' potential among our adolescents. These are problems that we can no longer afford to ignore. We can stand passively on the sidelines and moralize about good kids and bad kids, but the problems will continue to escalate. Ill talk about these problems as long as people will listen and Ill write as long as people will read. You talk of responsibility. Well, for me to know what I know and not speak out would be totally irresponsible . The same holds true for any parent, or for anyone who really cares. Like it or not, adolescent chemical dependency is alive and well. And, the most effective means of dealing with it is to increase the awareness of prevention concepts, intervention techniques, and treatment options. .To ignore it or to rationalize its significance, is to jeopardize the future of an entire generation. 8TH GRADE HIGH HONOR ROLL Jennifer Bowen, J.
