Consider Another Tax Reduction that has continued Inspired by the business acceleration tax income cut, the governrecent the in the nation following ment in Washington is being pressured to urge further reduction to extend over a period of years in the hope of added stimulation to our economy. Another tax cut was promised by both political parties, thus it can hardly be completely ignored. And those who promote such a reduction in taxes may also have some secret fears of the danger impending because of new inflationary trends that may weaken the value of the American dollar. We lecently noted the efforts made to bolster the sagging British pound and those who know, claim the results are only temporary because of the type of government Great Britain now has. Citizens know by experience that more dollars in our A pockets do little good if their buying value declines. further reduction in federal expenses like the one placed in effect by Robert S. McNamara, Secretary of Defense, would help. Only by reducing expenses and helping stop the wasteful expenditure of income tax money, can the value of money become more stable. A balanced budget would help speed the possibility of another tax reduction becoming a reality. Government costs must be reduced and thats a rather difficult task for an administration that feels it has a public mandate and that its success in the recent election was an endorsement of their management and spending policies. Great savings can be made by paring the budget Thousands can be removed from the federal payroll, and while it may work a hardship on them, American taxpayers have long been exasperated to see their money wasted by hordes of unneeded federal employes drawing high wages and making themselves secure behind the screen of federal pension funds. We must fight inflation, reduce federal payrolls, reduce taxes, and protect the buying power of our dollars. It will take great effort by a group of dedicated men who are more interested in the nations welfare than the temporary problems they encourage by removing more men and women from federal payrolls. ... Tfa Year 1965 ever after. For instance, everybody knows the chain of events that started when King David accidentally spied the shapely Bathsheba showering herself. How he sent her husband to be killed in battle, then married her himself. But what made this marriage memorable was their love for each other, which produced not only five children (one of whom was Solomon) but a dynasty that ruled Israel for 500 years. Different Love Another love that endured all sorts of personal vicissitudes, including premature death for both, was that of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. . The coming of a New Year serves to remind us that, as it has been so often said, time is like money. We are suddenly made aware that we have wasted some of this precious commodity during the year that has drawn to a close. Without this New Year to remind us, we might be unimpressed with the monotonous passage of time and the endless pattern of days and nights might have no special meaning. are optimistic, nearly all of us. We look upon the fNewWe Year as a time of bright hope and promise. We expect f more from 1965 that was achieved during 1964. Amid the gaiety that traditionally ushers in the new season, we find the time to be serious with ourselves. We reflect somewhat upon the year that will soon be history. We think of the things we shall do differently in the days, weeks and months ahead. This is as it should be. If we are to do better for ourselves in 1965, we must realize that our experiences of 1964 our achievements, successes, failures and unfinished endeavors provide the starting point for efforts toward a better tomorrow. We shall have this better tomorrow if we remember the kind of world that we live in. Our modern world is used to change. It is a competitive world. It is a world of contrast-luxuri- es, gadgets, and playthings on one hand, poverty and unhappiness on the other. It is a world not completely at peace with itself. Much can be done in the cause of brotherhood and in the effort to achieve better relations between all peoples and all nations. Let us hope that 1965 will be a better year for us all V . ... Our Friends Abroad out-of-wo- rk children. We had at the moment, for instance, both India and Brazil talking grandly of their plans to enter the nuclear arms race. Last year the United States gave India approximately 528 million dollars, in foreign aid. Neither country, even with this largess, can feed its own people, as was brought forcefully home this week with the publication of showing Indians rioting in Karala state in protest against Prime Minister Shastris stringent new food rationing program. The situation is little better in Brazil. And yet these two nations are now preparing to throw hundreds of millions of dollars into a senseless piece of grandstanding. Samuel Johnson, Englands great man of letters, married a. woman, considered gauche by his friends, so unattractive and provincial was she. But Johnson thought her the countrys most beautiful and fashionable lady, and for all the years this happy marriage lasted, kept extolling her charms. Some husbands owe their success to the love and devotion of their wives. The wives of Edgar Allen Poe and Robert Louis Stevenson inspired some of their greatest works. Without his wife acting as his eyes, the blind Milton never could have finished Paradise Lost. And because a German housewife named Jenny Marx went without her meals, her husband, Kaji Max, was able to finish his revolutionary Das than a decade. The story of the German poet Goethe is equally unusual. A bachelor who had numerous love affairs, Goethe decided to get married to his mistress, Christine Vulpius, only when his friends advised him to get rid of her because she drank.
