(Editors Note: Thia ia another in series of religious articlss on r arsa. churches in ths Featured thia week is the Wastvale Presbyterian Church in Huntar. Rev. Mr. John Browne ia organising pastor.) a Magna-Hunta- Westvale Presbyterian Church, one of the youngest churches of the west valley, was organized Oct. 6, 1963. The church is now meeting at 3630 South 5600 West, but will soon move its temporary meeting place to 3610 South 4400 West, where a manse is under construction. Plans are beginning for a permanent church building to be erected on the same property. In August, the Presbytery of Utah appointed the Rev. Mr. John Browne as organizing pastor. The word Presbyterian comes from the New Testament word which means preebyter. translated in our English Bible by the word elder. This points to one characteristic of the Presbyterian church, representative government by elders who are elected by the members of the church. Reformed Church The Presbyterian church is part of the family of Reformed churches, looking back in .history to the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. One early Reformed thinker was John Calvin, who lived and taught in Switzerland. Also active in Presbyterian history was John Knox, a Scot During the 16th century, the church became the national church of Scotland. It came to the colonies during the early 1700s. Presbyterians were active in the formation of the new nation, and many were at the front of the westward movement of the 19th century. Of about three lf million Presbyterand ians in the United States today, some six thousand are members of churches in Utah. In Council of Church Presbyterians associate themselves with other Christians through the World Council of Churches, the National Council of Churches, and through various local associations. The church considers itself one member of the family of Christians throughout the world, of whatever denomination. Along with other Protestant Christians, Presbyterians confess their faith in God in Christ and in the Holy Spirit They stress personal discipleship. They emphasize the direct relation of every believer to God through one-ha- -- prayer, the freedom of the individual conscience under God, and thd importance of the Bible as the source and text of Christ' '' ian teaching.
