Show MAGNA TIMES, MAGNA, UTAH Thursday, Oct. 24, 1963 Mire feir EflAS APPRAISER TERMS MAGNA "FUTURE SLUM AREA" Only two months ago, an appraiser for one of Utahs leading financial firms, refused to approve an application for a loan on commercial proparty in Magna. The reason given on the written report was that the buildings were being erected in a future slum area. The actual value of the buildings was further reduced 30 per cent as compared to the same construction in any other place except Magna. O O WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? You pay 8 mills now to Magna Water Company. We propose that you pay 6 more, to total 14 mills. Cities around us pay: South Salt Lake, 12 mills; Kaysville, 14; Bingham, 15; Layton, 15.50; Murray, 18; Midvale, 19; Brigham City, 19, Bountiful, 20. IF THESE OTHER CITIES CAN OPERATE ON 12 TO 18 one-thir- MILLS. d THEN WHY DOES MAGNA HAVE TO PAY 102 MILLS THAT THE OPPONENTS OF INCORPORATION CLAIM? We propose a budget of $91,315. The budget in all other cities includes water, sewer, airport, golf courses, swimming pools, parking meters. We do not have any of these items in the list of incomes or expenses, although we should include income from swimming pools and skating rinks into the City Treasury. We urge everyone to consider carefully one important phase of this question on the future of Magna: Who is behind the organized opposition to the election where the townspeople can express themselves at the polls in a true Democratic, constitutional manner? What are the motives of these people? Are they really concerned about increased taxes? Or are there some other reasons? WHY didnt they object to a 2 Vs mill increase in Salt Lake County taxes? WHY didnt they object to an ill tax for Magna Water Company in June? WHY didnt they object to the County Library tax in- crease? WHY in- didnt they object to Granite School Districts creased taxes? WHY arent they campaigning against a civic center that would entail additional tax cost to Magna taxpayers? It is based upon a reasonable and practical opera- tion of Magna, considering the number of miles of streets, the population, the physical condition of the Magna community and items necessary to proceed in an orderly and sensible manner to natural growth of a prosperous tax-payi- I community. 900 200 will be recommended here.) The law also provides that open public meetings be held weekly, that the City Council can employ a city manager, who is a qualified and trained administrator. All purchases must be called for in competitive bids when the sum exceeds a reasonable figure. Adopted City Ordinances Can Help Magna in Many Ways: 1. Nuisances can be abated. 2.
