This celebration marks a significant period in Salt Lake County history - the birth of a new form of government, the 2002 Winter Olympics and the memory of Sept 11 are all still fresh in ouf hearts, Workman said. "I hope in 50 years when our posterity open this time capsule that our accomplishments will measure up, and far exceed the legacy endowed us by our founders. Representatives from all 15 cities and the unincorporated areas of the County, along with elected officials and County Council members are being asked to provid several pieces of memorabilia for inclusion in a time capsule, which is scheduled to be opened in the year 2052. Members of the Magna Area Council are still searching for the right items from Magna to be included in the time capsule that will reflect the mining heritage of the community and its growth. "So far we have looking at including a book about Magna and the Cyprus High School Olympic pm, said Ron Henlme, president of the X 34-2- The 150 years ago. A recent celebration commemorated a century and a e enter- tainment. For more on the football game turn to page 9. ii "J . rn v- Iigiwlt iWnf elTilhfliiiV A tnfmshiiii mu ft lit is ti s . Council members have also suggested including a piece of copper ore from Kennecott Utah Copper and something from the Great Salt Lake, which is part of the Magna boundaries. "Those are two key elements of Magna. said Councilwoman StacyCase.. The time capsule is not expected to be buried until December. Any other suggestions for items from Magna to be included in the time capsule should be made to Henlme or other members of the Area Council. Other Unique items, such as Olympic pins, homemade scrapbooks and even a horseshoe from "Chester, the last equestrian resident in the area, have been donated by residents and city officials for inclusion in the time capsule. "It will be opened in 50 years during the County's bicentennial year, and will give that future generation a look back at what we believed was important to seal away from our first 150 years as Salt Lake County," Workman said. Study on 3500 South becoming more focused By PEBBI OLSON Editor As a study progresses how to improve the 3500 South corridor, four areas have been identified from Redwood Road to 8400West by die Utah Department of Transportation. In trying to understand die character of the corridor we have developed four different a zones," said Michael Won-all- , member of the 3500 South study team. "We think this is important because not one solution is appropriate far die whole corridor. The four zones include: The West Valley Traasitional Zone: This zone comprises the area between Redwood Road and Decker Lake Drive. This area goes from a light industrial land use merging into a commercial area at die eastern gateway into West Valley. The Regional Activity Zone: This zone comprises the area between Decker Lake Drive and 2700 West. This area has die Hale Theater and die Valley Fair Mall, WoraJJ said. People l copy; come from the region to recreate in this area and with die interchange there are specific needs that are different here than in other parts of 3500 South. The Central Commercial Zone: This zone comprises the area between 2700 West and 4800 West This is the commercialbusmess center of West Valley that people would like to see turned into a downtown corridor, Worrali said. Mixed Zone: This zone includes the area between 4800 West and 8400 West As 3500 South extends west into Magna it has a variety of mixed uses of commercial and residential areas throughout the western end of the corridor. The homes and businesses are scattered throughout this part of the corridor, Worrali said. Due to the varied character of the corridor these zones are likely to have different needs, and ultimately are likely to be treated differently in the solutions. The one point that residents are in'univcrsal agreement about is die need for more sidewalks throughout the corridor and improving the aspect of the street for pedestrians as well as mass transit users and fixing Bangerter Highway. This is especially the case with the Magna residents," Worrali said. UTA Route 37 is the heaviest used route in the ' 4 me tMi munity. Worrali said that a large per- centage of die comments have come from the Magna Community. We received one of die largest amount of comments during Magnas Night Out Against Crime, Worrali said. This community is very involved and interested in the project ' f I ' v 3 $ ' The Utah Department of Transportation is leading a collaborative project with West Valley City, Utah Transit Authority, and the Wasatch Front Regional Council to study 3500 South from 8400 West to Redwood Road. The study seeks to interact with die public to ensure that solutions for the corridor meet die transportation need; are compatible with the natural and community environment; and are an asset to the community. The 3500 South Corridor Study is moving forward, Worrali said, Currently, there are two elements of the study: The first element is continuing communication with the com varied modes of travel. Safety - Provide a safe facility for all travel modes. Transit - Improve the transit environment Non-motoriz- ed I ss system. UDOT is currently planning a test run of a bus rapid transit system this fall that would include express busses throughout die corridor and will be hosting another open house in Magna and West Valley on Oct 29-3- 0 to continue to update residents on the study and gather additional input from the com- 1 M munity to better understand issues, needs, and community values. The second element is a technical analysis to fully understand issues such as travel demand, safety, crashes, and congestion.Part of that analysis includes projecting what conditions will be in the future. Based on input to date the project study team has identified a set of preliminary conceptual project goals. The study team is looking for input from die community to further define those goals. .The preliminary goals include : East West Mobility -Provide east-wemobility for personal tops that will include st travel -- Provide facilities for continuous and connective travel. Business - Provide a transportation facility consistent with the business environment Sense of Place - Provide a transportation facility that recognizes 3500 South as the community core of the area and is an asset to the community. Visual Enhancement -Enhance the visual character of the corridor. ' Residential - Provide a transportation facility consistent with the residential environ- ment From the comments we have received from the communities involved, some of these goals or themes contradict each other, Worrali said. "We have toed to have people rate what was important to them and what was not applicable." Results of the study to date can be found at www.3500south.com. |
