All County vehicles displaying a County logo on the side will be identified as "McGruff Trucks" and all County facilities will be designated "Safe Place" sites. The expansion of these programs will assist children and teenagers who are in needotas&islance. 4child.taa.eaily identify a McGruff Truck, flag it f down and immediately receive help. County employees will be screened and trained accordingly to provide these services. Costs to implement this program will be minimal. The McGruff Truck Program was created in 1988. Salt Lake County's Public Works Department joined the McGruff Truck Program in July of 1995, and was the 100th organization to join. The goal of the Program is to make neighborhoods safer for children by providing aid in emergency situations. . Although the program is geared toward children, aid can be rendered to anyone in need of assistance. Other McGruff Truck community partners include Questar, Utah Power, AT&T Broadband, Qwest, and many of the city governments throughout Salt Lake County. Safe Place is a nationally affiliated program sponsored locally by Salt Lake Countyis Youth Services Division. In addition to these programs, the Salt Lake County Sheriffs Office provides programs for the community to train neighborhood groups, schools, church groups and concerned citizens on public safety. "We want to send a message to our children that Salt Lake County is a safe place. And to those who would perpetrate crimes against our children-w- e are watching," Workmans said. "Our drivers are out there. They're trained and they're ready. Our County will be a safe place for our children." At a news conference held June 20 at Fairmont Park, Workman announced the expansion of the McGruff Truck and Safe Place programs within the County that will provide more resources for those in crisis situations.
