He and his wife Bernice, married 62 years, are the parents of six children, Arlene Robinson, Linda Christensen, Richard Evans, Anita Openshaw and David Evans. Evans was a soldier on the front line m World War II. He left behind his young bride and 12 year-oldaughter. He was truly watched over and protected during the time he served his country and was brought home to his little family 4r ? - S' 7' d safely. He played baseball during his time in the Army and was captain of the ball club in Otsu, Japan. He played baseball for Kennecott Utah Copper and was outstanding third baseman. He was approached by the Chicago White Sox ball team. They wanted him to play pro ball, but because they played on Sundays he declined the offer. Evans worked for Kennecott for 35 years. He played church softball and brought home many All- - Church trophies as third baseman. Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 sons and their wives, Elwin Leland Chapman, Jr., and Candice Seay Chapman of Spartenburg, SC, and Michael Earl Chapman, Sr., and Angela Smith Chapman of Mission Viejo, CA; a daughter and her husband, Elizabeth Chapman Williams and Troy Don Williams of Spartenburg, SC; a sister, Virginia Alley; 3 brothers: Bud Chapman, Rodney Chapman, and Spartanburg, SC - Elwin Leland Chapman, Sr age 72, of 561 Lucerne Drive, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. A native of Garfield, UT, the husband pf Ferol Bernice Craig Chapman and a son of the late Isaac Earl and Althea Orr Chapman. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served as Bishop of the Church. He purchased the building and donated it to West Valley City for use as a senior recreation center in 1989.
