At our last Granite School District board meeting announced the building of a facility which will house new high tech programs. These classes will be offered to high school students from throughout the district. The building will be constructed adjacent to Granite High School. It will be called the Granite Technical Institute. The first phase of the program is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2003. Courses will be offered in two academic areas of Information Technology and Health Sciences Technology. These occupations are generally highly-skilletrained and paid and job market analysts state they expect growth in these employment arenas to continue for many more years. Since these programs are very expensive to offer, they will be housed in one specialized school. These courses will take Granite school district students on sequential pathways leading to industry recognized skill certificates and licenses which are designed to serve either as direct entry to specialized, high-payijobs. Agreements with higher education institutions will guarantee that GTI courses link directly to college level programs. These w ill lead to . associate degrees, bachelors degrees, but will also allow graduating students to leave the school with specialized diplomas, certified skills, industry licenses and signifi- - cant amount of college credits. Some of the instructional time will be given at the student local school. It will be similar to the "clustering that die district did this year. Bus transportation will be offered from the students home schools. This will allow all interested students to participate and alleviate the necessity for parents to buy vehicles, etc. If you have junior high or high school youth who may be interested in these programs, contact your school counselor. As an emergency item, the Board also adjusted the list of schools that will be open and closed for enrollment outside their boundaries during the January Open Enrollment window. Based on new information related to building capacity and projected enrollments, the status of Bennion Junior High was changed to close, and the status of Hunter and Taylorsville High Schools was changed to open. With all the junior high boundary changes that have been approved for next year because of the opening of the new junior high, a new principal for die building was announced. Alan Bailey, currently principal at Bonneville Junior High will become the new principal. The appointment will become effective on Jan. 22. In next weeks column, I provide an interview with Mr. state-of-the-- d, ng College-owne- members will be added in the 2002 general election. The recommendations for die new school board precinct boundaries have been submitted to the Salt Lake County council for final approval. If approved, one precinct boundary would include the central part of the district stretching from east of South Salt Lake to West Valley City. The second new area includes a portion of West Valley City and the large portion of unincorporated' Sale Lake County, which includes Magna. two-sea- d t, single engine plane.
