Show n V t 1 he Magna TimesYVest Valley News, Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 3 Community Primary children's expand Wildlife officials concerned counseling for victims Primary Children's Medical Center has received a grant to improve and expand counseling services throughout the Intermountain West for children and adolescents who experience traumatic stress. The hospital is one of 18 institutions in the United States to receive money from inia $30 million three-yetiative, which was issued by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the IJ.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The initiative will establish a National Center for Child Traumatic Stress, create a system to determine the best treatment for children and adolescents, and implement those practices Jiroughout the country. 'The recent events in New York and Washington have ncreased public and professional awareness about the importance of addressing the psychological trauma associated with these and many other traumatizing experience," said Dr. David Corwin, medical director of Primary Children's Center ar i ( i s. e and refugee trauma. "We are already providing these services to children who are victims of child abuse," said Julie Bradshaw, director of PCMC's Center for Safe and Healthy Families. " This grant will help us build on our existing program, assist other child therapists and agencies throughout our region, and evaluate how to better help traumatized children." The Intermountain West Child Trauma Stress Treatment Network will be preated by recruiting and training 2Q child therapist from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona. . Each of these, in turn, will recruit five to seven therapist from his or her local community to participate in monthly training sessions. The network will also provide ongoing consultation and support by phone, email and personal visits to the community therapists. Psychologist Kevin Gully, who currently heads the Center's treatment program, will lead this new effort. for Safe and Healthy Families. "Being part of this nauonal effort to improve care for children and adolescents who have suffered victimization and other psychological traumas will help us bring the latest treatment methods to traumatized children throughout this part of the country," PCMC's Center for Safe and Healthy Families has received $1,005,974 from this grant to create and direct the Intermountain West Child Trauma Stress Treatment Network. Funds will be used to recruit, train and support child therapist from the Intermountain region to provide specialized counseling for children and adolescents who have experienced traumatic stress through: Witnessing or experiencing interpersonal violence or life threat, Traumatic loss of family, Sexual assault and abuse, Medical trauma, including injuries from accidents and invasive medical procedures, Natural and human-cause- d disasters, War and displacement. well-qualifi- ed 90th Birthday - A helicopter flight flown by the Division of Wildlife Resources on Dec. 13 found 51 moose in the canyons and foothills near Salt Lake City. In the past few days, the Division has tranquilized 1 3 moose in the Salt Lake Valley and has moved them safely back into the mountains. "Conversion of wintering habitat in the valley into urban habitat for people, and increasing moose populations, are the main reasons we're seeing these animals as problems in the valley right now," said Alan Clark, Wildlife Section chief for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "Recent, heavy snowfalls have forced the animals out of higher elevations and onto winter ranges that they've haven't occupied for several years," Clark said. 'These winter ranges are now covered with houses and other buildings that have been built in the access," he said. To help the moose and keep people safe, the Division of Wildlife Resources is urging people to do the following: slow down while driving. especially at night.
