DEAN LEDBETTER East High snapped the Cyprus e Pirates winning streak with a 5 diamond decision on April 1 in Salt Lake City. After achieving five consecutive conference triumphs, the setback slipped the Cyprus varsity baseball team into a second-plac- e tie with East in the 4A Region 5 Ashleigh Brilliant ; lots of them, Pirate men, I Mean. Great players of the past. Some you may not know about, some you have watched as ihere are : East had a similar there wore the Blue and Gold. Its great to tell you about some of them. Lets start with a coach: Almercer came to Cyprus in the spring of 1946. He was to coach football and track. Bill Cowley had won the state football championship in nine teen forty four and then left to become a druggist up in Davis County. was the Coach Mercer to happen to Cyprus (Athletically) in the history of the school. The man could really coach, he knew both football and people. He called a team meeting in the old gym that April and 1 was there. Form that day on I was enthralled. He captured all the school athletes in one day. The Senior class that played first few Mercer, featured David Cook, Earl Jeppson, Lauren Empey and Nick Klekas. . Kay Kirk was on that team dong with Jim Coffey and Lawrence Conti. lot of juniors stepped up zxsuch as skip Johnson, Stan Johnson and Dick Henderson, and Doug Thurman. It only took coach Mercer one year to build a team. The Pirates had a good season losing only to South High in a practice game. The pirates tied with both Bingham and Tooele which kept them from winning the region championship. The Mercer era was here. ' The coach' went on to play for the state championship three J i times in the next seven years. He later coached at Westminster college. Mercer was a true Pirate man, He was the best coach I ever played for on any level. Many Pirates of the late forties and early fifties cherish 3-- v i-j- 1'-- 3-- 2.
