I can hear numerous' coaches and Thing Anon Do not ever underestimate the value of an education. Nothing you do in life will be more beneficial to your general well being than a good well balanced education. A wise man said. Education is the thing that t urns men into gentlemen. Often athletic participants are big on sports and not much on education, and the school and the community suffers accordingly. Many a gifted athlete spends hours of dedicated time in the mastery of sport skills and then goes thru the motions in the classroom. You and I both know the type; those who merely get by in English and Mat h but excell on the playing field. Some of the local high school studs think that the school was built so they could return punts or slide into second base. Many a jump shot artist thinks that the gymnasium was built first and long before the science department. These are they w ho go to school only to compete, and they merely tolerate the academics. Although their major interest is the teams, they often flirt with ineligibility because of the lack of intensitv in the classroom.- - . Contrary to many opinions, the school is not a football academy or a basketball prep school. That expensive well staffed building was not built solely to engender team games and athletic contests. The school is a many faceted institution designed to meet the needs of the public in general and not for any selected athletic By PAT STEVENSON This probably has something to do with Murphys Law: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Those stalwart members of the school teams would do well to learn how to comingle athletics and education to the extent that on graduation day they do not remind people of the village idiot. I knew a half back once, but that another story and and not worth recording here. A tale that is worth telling involves the big tall basketball player who went thru school without paying much attention to learning. Since he could dribble and shoot everyone overlooked the fact that he couldnt read and pushed him along for the good of the school and the team. His great playing days were spent hanging around the schools fringes until practice time and then entering the gym to dazzle his teamates. coaches and other basketball buffs. Our friend missed alot of classes but played in all the games establishing many school records. It wasnt intelligence, but rather a lack of application, that made this good player into a graduate unable to enter college and without any saleable skills. If and when you graduate from your favorite school, few will remember your team and personal records, but everytime you open your mouth, everyone will know if you re educated.
