Show Times-Thursda- y, Page Utah April 1, 1982 AirSs Festal to The Utah Arts Festival will hold auditions for professional actors, dancers, singers and musicians to perform in its western premiere of the bluegrass musical Diamond Studs. The cast calls for performers between the ages of 5 who can sing and dance. There are openings for eleven male roles, three female roles and a chorus of six, comprised mainly of women. Performers need to contact Olivette for an audition Trotter will be held at Auditions appointment. Steinway Hall, 154 South Main Street next to Daynes Music Company in Salt Lake City. They are scheduled for Monday, April 5 and W ednesday, April 7 from3 p.m. 18-4- (801-533-589- 5) IhoDdl amndMoiDS p.m. Performers are encouraged to attend the Monday audition to enable the director to conduct call backs on Wed- until 10 nesday. The Festival requests performers to bring a resume and a photograph with them to the audition. They will be asked to dance at the audition and should arrive prepared to sing two songs. The Festival is also looking for musicians who play either piano, banjo, violin or percussion to be in the pit orchestra. Diamond Studs is a light, humorous, bluegrass musical based on the life of J esse James. It is written by Jim Wann with music and lyrics by Jim Wann and Bland Simpson. The musical will open on Ap50 5 Tuesday, June 22 at 8 p.m. and run Wednesday through Saturday with two performances daily at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. There will be a final matinee Sunday, June ,27 concluding a total of ten performances. The play will be staged in a large tent theatre erected on the Salt Palace grounds. Approximately 300 people will attend each performance free of charge. Directing the play is Frances Royster. Royster is a director residing in Iowa City where she is currently working on her PhD in theatre at the University of Iowa. Royster has worked 15 years in community theatre directing dramas and musicals on the east coast. Diamond Studs will be Roysters first play in the Salt Lake . surudl 7 area. Rehearsals for the play will begin the week of May 24. An exact schedule is not currently available. The Utah Arts Festival will be held June 23 through June 27 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m daily. It will feature 70 visual artists, over 85 performing art groups, demonstrating craftsmen, a western film event and the Childrens Art Yard. The Festival is a celebration of the arts emphasizing the great diversity of artistic expression in Utah and the Intermountain West.
