In view of the shortage of farm help, the following suggestions are offered as a service to our farm customers: I. To drain shallow well or suction type pumps and water open all drain plugs and leave them open until the pump is returned to service. Plunger type shallow well pumps may have drain plugs for both suction and discharge chambers. Open both and run the pump for a few strokes so as to release any water that may be entrapped above the valves. If water drains or siphons back to the pump, disconnect the pipe line. 2. If water service is to be nued for a period, it is advisable to drain the complete system, including the pressure tank and suction and discharge piping. Sometimes the tank will not drain properly unless the plug in the top of die tank is opened. If there is no drain in the bottom of the tank, it will be necessary to either pump out the tank or upset it. A suction line will nott drain if equipped with a foot valve. In such cases the suction line Systems, dis-co- nt should be disconnected well. it die 3. Seme deep well water 7- t by. leal are made frost-promeans of an underground discharge cor nection, which per mits mounting the pump head at the surface. S.AJL No. 20 crankcase oil should be f light used in such pumps so as to insure proper lubrication in freezing weather. 4. M(At water systems ere permanently housed in froet-proshelters such as basements and well pits, 'where no special attention is required in winter. The principal danger of such installation freezing arise from failure to dote a door o window, or the well pit coyer. Moat people, howtver, provide only enough frost protection for their water system to take care of norma, winter weather. Extreme low temperatures or call W Protracted cold spells measures. These measures may include: A. Additional insulation, such as corn fodder or straw over well pit covert and basement windows. B. H. C. Anderson, - community servile member of the local war price and rationing board, said today.-Thi- s change in OPAreguIation&-w- e discussed along with many other problems of rationing and price control by Chester Bowles in his weekly report. To make rationing fit the practical needs of American families said Mr. Bowles, and to assist charitable organizations in carrying .out. their traditional gift giving at Christmas, the ban hps been lifted Henceforth, housewives may give rationed foods bought with their own ration points to other consumers or to charitable organizations, who in turn may distribute them without collecting ration stamps. In addition, shoes may be purchased with the familys shoe coupons and may be given away ration free. Issuance of one brown point for each of kitchen fats, Mr. Bowles estimated, will probably more than double the of this valuable commodity collected for war purposes. In addition to ration points, the housewife wijl continue to receive the ceiling price of four cents a lb. Attention was drawn to the fact that the OPA point value charts for December take into account the emergency cut in pork values made on November 19 as well as those made on beef, effective December 5. Retailers, the board member said, should not sell pork for less than the point values listed on the charts since these are the correct values. out-the-do- Ladies of the , Empress Theatre BRAND NEW Foods purchased with ration coupons by a consumer may he given as Christmas presents Former Resident A FREE SHOW AS GUESTS OF THIS PAPER (These names are taken from our Subscription list.)
