Endow the Supreme Court Bench, Jews among tho ablest leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives, and a Jewish governor of the largest and wealthiest state, there is no room for senseless prejudice against a people merely because they observe a different religion from others. When the census enumerators make their count of noses of all the people of the United States the first fortnight of April, they will have to record the race to which each individual inhabitant belongs. Everybody will be listed as either White, Negro, Indian, Mexican, Hindu, Japanese or Chinese. No questiog, however, will be asked by the tensus takers as to the religious affiliations or preference of any individual. The only religious census will be compiled as heretofore, from the reports of membership made by the organizations of the various sects and creeds. Strong efforts were made by representatives of various denominations to have the census questions include one about the religion of each person counted. The request was denied because of the earnest protest of representatives of the Jewish congregations of the nation. They pointed out that in many parts of the country the prejudice against the Jewish people was increasing, and that to reveal the number of Jews in each community might lead to h demonstrations and serious trouble. It is hoped that the apprehensions voiced by the Jewish representatives are exaggerated. Jt would be a sad commentary on the basic concept of our demo cracy if it were true that any such h feeling widespread existed in the United States. The part that men of the Jewish faith played in the War of the Revolution and in the development and growth of the na tion since then is too often forgotten or overlooked. Their public service has long been as outstanding as their philanthropies. Four penniless Negro who had been convicted of murder by a Florida court, were set free by the highest tribunal of the land because they had been convicted on confessions extorted from them under threats and torture and unsupported by ipv other evidence7 That sort of thing is so comrqpn in Russia, in Nazi Germany and in other dictatorships, that every citizen lives in terror of being arrested without warrant, imprisoned without access to counsel, subjected to physical maltreatment and mental pressure to confess to some offense of which he has not the least knowledge, and sent to his death without the right to appeal to a higher court. We do not sentence Americans to death because they have departed from their political party line, as they do in Russia, or because they are Jews, as they do in Germany. And the Supreme Court has reiterated, more vigorously than ever, the elemental doctrine that even the lowliest Negro has the same rights to a fair trial and full hearing as the most highly placed citizen of the land. We do not believe that Americans want to exchange our system for one in which human lives and liberties are held as privileges which rulers may destroy as they see fit.
