Show MEETING OF NEW PARTY Held in Salt Lake City Wednesday. Organization affected and speeches made The meeting held in Salt City on Wednesday night at the Grand Opera house, for the purpose of organizing a new political party In Utah, to be t. 5. known as the American party, was 4Hh attended by all classes of people. The V house was tilled to Its full capacity. Across the top of the stage was a large banner with the Inscription: "We demand a State without religion and a church without politics." Speeches weie made by OgdcnIIIlcs, Senator Fred T. Dubois, E. 15. Crltch-low Crltch-low and Judge McDougcll. There were some very harsh expressions made, especially by the last two speakers. speak-ers. Mr. Crltchlow referred to Moses Thatcher as being heart broken over I the treatment he had received from his brethren. The gentleman forgot to mention that when Moses Thatcher Thatch-er ran- for Senator that three of his (entile friends positively refused to vote for him when their votes would have elected him senator, Besides this there were other undercurrents at work against Mr.Thatchcr brought about by other Gentiles who arc now running for otHce. This hypocritical cant does not set well with those who arc familiar with past events. It Is a positive fact, that can be proven beyond a doubt, that those Influences In-fluences that arc now charging Moses Thatchci's 'defeat wholly to the chinch, hclocd to bring about those conditions themselves. Jl Mr. Crltchlow made no hit In ?Hp- his remarks when he called Apostle C. W. Penrose an apostolic hyena. lie insulted every "Mormon" present who had any regard for his church. One of the worst Insults offered during dur-ing the evening was when Judge McDougcll Mc-Dougcll statc(j that "when Mormons Mor-mons went abroad, they were ashamed of their names." These remarks, re-marks, and others slmillar, were resented re-sented by many present. When a rising ris-ing vote was called for on the adoption adop-tion of the report favoring the new organization, about one-half w h o wore In the galleries remained in their scats. Many joung "Mormons" present pre-sent disapproved of the harsh remarks made against their people. Senator Dubois was very vindictive in his speech, and promised those pre- I sent, (as one of the Senate committee I on privileges and election) that the H "Mormon" question would be piobed H to the bottom. The resolutions adopted at the H meeting set forth that organizations H would be ctTccted In every county and H precinct in the State. H The most conservative people think H that outside of Salt Lake county the American party will cut but little Hg- jjjPVT lire, starting out on the old lines of Mf Liberalism, It will surely bring the H "Mormons" closer together tegardless H of their political allllations. H The speakers would emphatically HI state that they had no light against HJ the "Mormon" people and their rell- Hj glon and in the next breath would H brand them as cowards In being HJ ashamed of their religion, Remarks HJ of this kind will make "Mormons" HJ feel that they want no allllations HJ whatever with men who thus abuse HJ them. No person who has a regard HJ for theli religion will mil to with men H whose hearts aic tilled witli venom H and hatied towaids them. |
