Show ANOTHER KIND OF FOOTBALL To Be Played at B. Y. C. Today. No Fighting, Broken Bones or Deaths. For some time enthusiasts In the Stato have sought to stir up Interest In the English football game, called "Association" "As-sociation" or "sockcr" football. This Is somewhat different from the Atncrl can game as It Is now played, partlcu-laily partlcu-laily different In the matter of Its roughness. The Game. Association football is iindoubtly the oldest of all Knglish national sports. It has now developed Into a number of highly organized games, and the dilllculty of finding Its actual origin Is as great as that of discovering discover-ing the commencement of athletic contests. Tho game Is played by elocu men on each side- one advance forward, six forwards, three backs and one goal keeper, The game Is commenced by a place kick from tho center of the field of play, opponents not being allowed al-lowed within ten yards of tho ball. The object of the game Is to advance the ball toward your opponent's goal and then kick It through, which Is the only method of scoring. After a goal Is scored the losing side kicks off, and after a charge of ends at half-time the ball Is kicked off by the opposite side, which originally did so. When the ball passes over tho touch-lino (side line) It is thrown In by a player of the side opposite to that which played It out. The player throwing the ball must stand on touch-line facing the field of play and throw the ball In over his head with both hands, the ball being played by another player When the ball is played behind the goal-lino by a player or the opposite side, it is kicked off by any one of tho playeis behind whose goal-line It went within the goal area, but If plajcd behind by anyone of the side whoso goal line It Is, a player of the opposite side kicks It from within ono yard of the corner flagstaff. Neither tripping, iflcKlng, nor Jumping Jump-ing at a player is allowed. A player cannot use his hands to hold or push an opponent, a player (the goal keeper excepted) can not Intentionally handle the ball. The goal keeper within his own half of tlie field of play may use his hand, but can not carry the ball. The olllcers of the game consist of a referee, who also keeps a record of tho game and acts as timekeeper, and two linesmen to assist the referee. The Church schools have decided to encourage this game, and a contest has been ariangc1 for today between the H. V. C. and Salt Lake team, the game to be played on tho H. Y. C. campus at U:30 o'clock. Tho H. Y. C. boys nave been giving considerable attention at-tention to the new game for several weeks and will probablo put up somewhat some-what of a scrimmage. A member of tho Salt Lake Association Associa-tion In speaking of "sockcr" football says: "There Is one thing In favor of sockcr that can not be denied. It is one of the best games known to develop devel-op tho all-around athlete. Let the colleges adopt this game and It will be shown In the track and field meets that what I say is true. "We are anxious to sec tho game established es-tablished In Utah. We are perfectly willing to coach, free of charge, teams In any of the schools that care to take up tho sport. Our time and attention will bo gladly given if wo can only arouse some Interest. We want to see a big state league formed with teams from all the important schools, and then play for the Ltatc championship. champion-ship. If this Is done it will not Interfere Inter-fere with the other game at all, but It will help It and will develop athletes.' |
