Consequently our business is a matter of personal concern to each one of our customers. j&Li &.! cvui -- For many other reasons our interests and the interests of our customers are closely related. For example, in the twelve months ended last July, we paid in wages alone $2,399,062, all of which went directly to the residents of the territory we serve, and in 1916 we paid taxes amounting to $262,126. On the other hand, the growth and prosperity of our company depends very largely upon the good-will and support of our customers. With so many in-terestsi in-terestsi in common, the Utah Power & Light Company and its customers are natural partners. We want it to be an actual partnership. We want our customers cus-tomers to be stockholders in the Company so that they will have the larger interest that comes with ownership. Before the announcement made several weeksago of the company's offer to sell its 7 per cent Cumulative Preferred Stock direct to its customers in order to secure a wider distribution of the ownership and earnings of the company in the communities which it serves, our customers had already acquired this stock to the extent of more than $1,300,000 by purchase in the open market. Since that announcement others of our customers have purchased from the company direct $70,000 of this stock. To place this investment within reach of the large number of our customers who must depend for their investments upon their monthly earnings, we have formulated a, plan by which this 7 per cent Preferred Stock may be secured se-cured on small monthly payments, as well as by full cash payment at the time of subscription.
