Show OBITUARY. Died, at his residence near Providence, Cache Co. (County), Utah, of pneumonia at 4 a.m. Sept. (September) 17th, 1880, Oscar N. Rice, born Oct. (October) 19th, 1835, in Wastnaugh, Michigan. He joined the church and gathered with his parents at Nauvoo, locating at Camp Creek where they suffered persecution and he was taken prisoner by the mob. Arrived at the valley in 1852. Was a member of the 40th Quorum of Seventies, and was enrolled with the minute men of Salt Lake City. Was with Lot Smith's command in 1857, and he went in relief of the Salmon River missionaries in 1858. He was married to Jane C. Miller April 5th, 1859, and settled in Smithfield, Cache Co. (County) 1n 1860, and moved to Providence in 1864. Many friends assembled at the funeral services, Sunday the 19th at 10 a.m., and after fitting addresses from Elders J. Miller and H. Mathews, followed a solemn procession to the grave. A large family and many friends mourn his loss. A husband kind, a father dear, A friend to many in distress; We mourn and shed the parting tear, Farewell, farewell thou art gone to rest. |
