Show SHADOWS.

Shadow and substance - who is he can say Where this doth surely end and that begin And which is greater? Who hath scales to weigh Alike the shadow and the substance in? Who rightly knows them - which is which? and who Conceiveth which is older of the two?

Thou pluck'st the daisy from the happy grass, Touched with its lowly looks, but art too weak To pluck the wandering shadows where they pass. Great is the shade; and I have heard men speak Of one old Shadow able to appall Eyes not afraid of substances at all.

Yes, thou art he, O Death, whom mortals name Life's shadow, trembles, trembles at a shadow's tread; Albeit there are who know how noontide's flame Scorches, and of the shadow have no dread, Seeing?? it means a cool, dusk place with trees All round, and grass, and much oblivious ease. - William Watson in Scribner. |
