Lejeune retires as commandant of the United States marines: March 5, his comrades leathersay that the greatest neck;" of them all will pass from that tost." Lejeune, they say, is one of the best soldiers ot Ins day, out it is his big. heart and strength of character those associated with turn wilt jretnembetv- - There nave-beefew commandants better loved than he or one who has come so close to the hearts of his men In an official document on file In Washington, he is described as possessed of those traditional characteristics of American marine Officers coolness and courage in face of the most extreme peril. No man connected with the corps would wish a higher compliment General Lejeune was graduated from Annapolis in 1888, a member of the class with Admirals Robinson Hughes and Secretary Wilbur He ranked high in standing. The test of his fitness came his first year out while he was a cadet on the U. S. S. Vandalia in the Samoan islands. March 15, 1889, the vessel was wrecked in these waters, and young Lejeune so conducted himself that he drew praise from his superior officers. . General Lejeunes career as a marine started with the completion Of this required two-yecruise.' He Joined the corps as a second lieutenant in 1890 and step " by step through the succeeding years rose to the rank of comman- dant. He served throughout the war as a first Spamsh-America- n lieutenant in command of t,he marine guard aboard the U, S. S. Cincinnati. . At the conclusion of the war he returned to the United States and from then on assignments carried him io all parts of the world Pan ama, the Philippines, Cuba, Mexico and finally France, where he commanded the famous second division during the world war all saw and knew this gaunt soldierly and valiant marine officer, and came to love and respect him. While fighting his way up, Lejeune at all times delighted in doing more than was expected of him. During the Spanish war, he aetpd at his own suggestion as clerk to the commanding officer He also served as intelligence officer and did his work so well that the navy department praised his efforts. His record at the war college stands out among the best evern made there, and drew commenda-tdofrom the acting secretary of war. During the Cuban insurrection in 1912 a resident of the island wrote Lejeune was most con-, spicuous among the marine offleers ever to be stationed there During the . occupation of Vera Cruz in 1914 he was praised as an excellent officer under all conditions. But it was during the world war that General Lejeune reached the greatest heights. With his second 'division he is credited with breaking the Hindenburg line at Blanc Mont Ridge, releasing from German menace the historic city of Rheims. His activities in the re-- ' e sector are garded, as among the most remarkable achievements of the war He was appointed major general commandant in 1920. ' General Lejeune announced that his retirement as commandant does not mean that his interest in the corps will be lessened. He is expected to proceed to the Pacific coast after March 5. where he will be stationed for the two years re-- mainlng before he is required by law to retire.
