We appreciate the fact that the public happiness is the true object of legislation and can be secured only by the masses of mankind, they themselves awakened to a knowledge and care of their own interests. The world can advance only through the culture tK.the moral and intellectual powers of the people. To accomplish this end by means of the people themselves is the highest purpdse of government. The government by the people is" in very truth the strongest government injbe world. Again: we should not be unmindful of the fact that our public school system and our higher institutions of learning haye provided the opportunities for an education that will forever keep sacred in the minds of our children the purposes for which our government and its institutions were founded. They also - provide for the development of the mind and soul and hand in the Arts aqd sciences so that the youth of the lqd can build their lives upon the principles of everlasting truth. Our gratitude-shou- ld be overflowing to those who are devoting so much of their time and ability to the development of Gods splendid truths in our religious institutions, and implanting' them injthe hearts of our children. Public thanks should be given them for their untiring efforts, voluntarily given, in keeping our religious institutions active and alive. For here it i w here the true spirit of the Christ" and the development of the soul is taught. This Christms- season should bring a deeper appreciation than ever before in out history, not alone because ,of the facts stated above, but because of our religious, moral ind physical standing.. When our general condition is placed upon the measuring table of comparison between, other coun-- , tries and our own, we find ourselves overflowing .with lifes blessings. The teeming millions of men, women and children who are literally starving to death in Russia and other .European countries calls for a moments paiise, and in pause there instinctively arises in the human heart the love of Christ and with it a prayer that God in His mercy and justice will alleviate the suffering and permit a portion of our substance to go to them with our sympathy and blessings. This is as it should be. The pangs of hunger are almost unknown to us in this land of America and especially is this the case in these peaceful valleys. This Christmas time we hope will carry with it the true spirit of the Christ, that wisdom and thought will govern the purchase of gifts, that none will go to the extreme in buy ing gifts, but rather let the spirit of love and appreciation lie the fundamental, upon which the gifts are given. Sometimes we spend too much money for items that are not use- -' ful. A useful article is always received with a deep feeling of gratitude, therefore let us be thoughtful along these lines and if we have any surplus remember there is always x a place to put it where it will do good. None of us know what the coming year will bring. Now' is the time io act, let us properly care for the substance God has so abundantly blessed us with, free ourselves from obligations and debt, do our duty 4o God and man and carry always the spirit of the ChrisL-Wc extend to one and all our very best wishes for a splendid Christmas and a prosperous New Year together ' with every good gift and blessing desired. May Gods blessings attend us all during the coming year. May His love and peace be with us and may we all work unitedly' for the 'accomplishment of His Divine purposes, is our humble . .
