Show April 18, .Tuesday, TIIE 1905. MON U M ENTST.O - h Grouped about the Alaskan building at the Lewis and ClarkExposition, opening in Portland, June 1, may be seen a number of motley-hue- d and grotesquely carved poles. .They are clumsy but vivid examples of the printers art and of .varied design. Here is such 'an awful apology for, a man, squatted upon the head of a cream-col- o red frog. Below this strange appearing amphiblon is seen the effigy of a woman, and so on the figures multiply until the bottom .of the pole is reached. Another of these old monuments is crowned with a formidable looking raven. Under this bird of prey is a bear which sits on the head of a man holding a cane. Each figure has its particular significance. Collectively, they tell a i marvelous story of the superstitions and customs which prevail among the Indians of the District of Alaska. Such are the totems the heraldic signs of these natives. Aside from the totems may amusement any as afford, ethnological specimens f hey are of unusual moment ; ,as genealogical records they are without parallel, apd as carvings they are strikingly original in .both conception and execution. Some are erected as monuments to absurdities of belief, and others as silent eulogies to departed parents or rulers. Alaska offers every inducement to the ethnological observer. Its people, to most of us, are practically unknown. Research would indicate an anterior relationship between the Alaskans and Asia'V tics. But the natives of this north ern district are not idol worshippers. While they have not improved, to any extent, in arts and crafts, their advancement morally and intellectually has been especially manifest. Upon the Greek church devolved the task of promulgating the rudimentary teachings of civilization among the native Alaskans. The Presbyterian faith is fast superseding the former. Together with the Indian schools established by the government, these teachings are gradually bringing the natives to a high standard of manhood and are eliminating the various beliefs and superstitions that existed heretofore. Notwithstanding this, the totem poles remain. They are blessed with eternal interest and will ever arouse the curiosity of the stranger and invite their origin and significance may be told and retold. The poles will always prove interesting as specimens of archaic art. They represent merely one of those peculiarities of tradition so characteristic of aborigines. Each tribe of Alaskans adopts Portland, April 17. far-Northe- rn interro-gation.JTales- of an animal, a bird or plant as a sponsor. This is dubbed a totem. The natives believe that the totem will favor them with divine protection in the way of reciprocating for a manifestation of proper respect. They do not accept the totem as a deity mere ly as a protector. Assuming that the hibernator, Bruin, is thus favored by an Alaskan tribe, his image is handsomely carved upon divers poles. Bright hued paints are lavished upon the effigies. With the Alaskans, it is color or the laek of it as long as the artistic effect is obtained. Such is, the simple philosophy of these northerners. They labor under the delusion that if Bruin should meet with one of them while on his meanderings, he would seek the member of another tribe for his offering to Epicurus. However, if calamity a member of the overtake should tribe, it is assumed that he aroused the ire of the totem and received his just deserts. Like all good people, the Alaskans are not immortal on earth. Generation succeeds generation. In this manner the appreciation The of toteiqs is differentiated. succeeding generation possibly may prefer a frog or a bird to a bear. This accounts for the variance in design. Occasionally a pole is erected to a departed parent, a chief or some other dignitary. Accordingly the images are carved on poles and erected amid much merry making. The genealogical pole is illustrated in the exhibit at the Exposition. Visitors to the Centennial will notice a huge pole, the topmost totem being a large raven, head downward. This pole was gi?en to the Alaskan commission by Yonnate,a member of the Tulingit tribe. Ilis mother was the honored one. She was a member of the Raven Clan. The significance of the totem is obvicous. A brown bear totem of theKokwonton tribe to which Yennates( father belonged is under the raven. Below the bear is the figure of an Indian holding a cane, in representa tion of the womans brother, a noted Indian doctor and sorcerer. This unique genealogy may only be interpreted by a member of the family. The totem poles, sixteen in all, are from the 'different tribes living on Prince of Wales Island. At an old. village 'called Turekan, four were obtained. Another was presented to the commission by Cbieif Tom, a Tulingit of Kla wack. The very large poles are from the Ilydah villages, Sukwan, Klinkwan, Onherklis and Kasaan. All of the poles together, wth an enormous dugout war canoe, wCfe loaned by the natiives, but must be returned to them at the close of the Exposition. The totem pole is as sacred to the Alaskan family as is the old family Bible to a Caucasian. By Blane Phillips. well-know- n , - true to the faith. answer of , is the g questions, kloneyback too.
