MeCune, by the committee appointed by the joint assembly, promises to become a rather protracted one. So far, all the evidenoe in the case leads one to wonder why Law, even if his statements are true, should run the risk of blasting his own reputation to say nothing of the possibility of a protracted term .in prison, and -- disgraceful retirement from the Legislature by the presentation of what, so far, ap pears a very weak story. , Unless Law has mere cards up his sleeve than he has yet shown, he is, if not a villain, a , fit candidate for the - lunatic asylum. Aside from a life of probity and honor, Mr. McCunes friends urge in his defense that upon Saturday, the day Law claims he was to pay him $1,500 for his vote, MeCune was already certain of a sufficient number of votes to elect him, and only Law's sensational charge concocted McCunes friends claim because of a knowledge of this fact prevented that election by frightening away some of his support If he had enough voter, why should he run unnecessary risks by attempting to bribe Law? Law has weakened his case to a ? great extent by admitting that' for some time he hung around hia workers and headquar; ters, actually soliciting a bribe, which is as much an offense as ofThere can be but fering one. little doubt that had MeCune gone into the trap setting business he Me-Cun- e, ' . Yesterday was the natal day of that illustrious patriot, brave soldier, great statesman and "Father of His Country, George Washing ton. Time but adds to the luster of his achievements. These are a few of the weak points in Law's case, sb seen by Mr. Cunes friends, and are rehearsed without prejudice to Mr. Law. The strong points, if any there are, yet have to be developed. If the strongest evidence has been presented, Mr. Law has brought disgrace on the State without even the most remote chance ,of proving the truth of his allegations, against Mr. MeCune, and with the certainty of damnjng his own career.
