FOENINST FU8I0U. - 'Jhc Of late the Ogden Standard, pro fessedly the Alpha and Omega of the silver situation in Utah, and the court of ultimate resort, seems to be weakening; not that it ia allegiance to the cause of the white metal is weakening, or that it has been converted to the proposition; but because it is making certain demands from the .Democratic, the only effective silver party for official recognation of those who assisted the Democracy in winning the last National election. The only ; party which stood outright for the free coinage of na , silver, outside of the Populist party, which was not strong enough to attain any result what-evewas the Democratic party. r, That party won in every silver state. Its platform was of the right kind; it had the right nog to attract every silver man in the internjouotiin region. Silver Republicans flocked to the Democratic banner matter" of principle and and with I . self-preservati- disinterested real without-hope- of reward but now the Standard undoes the good work it performed daring that memorable campaign by' advocating,' nay, demanding-- , reward way of officerfor faction which assisted in the every fight , . -- -- lath It purports to voice the sentiments of the Silver Republicans in this regard, and demands what it conceives to be some sort of equit-abl- e division in case of victory. More surprising still, Hon. Ai J. Weber, one of the wheelharses of Democracy in Weber county, ad vocates fusion, on the ground that silver cannot afford to lose the support of any faction. True, silver needs all the support it can get, in order to overcome the combined efforts of ' its inveterate enemies; Jcapital and straight-ou- t Hanna, Gage, McKinley Republicanism; but would true patriotism insist as a condition of support, on a division of the incidental and altogether inadequate spoils? We are confrontedTwlth a more serious condition than exieted before the war; for whereas at that timo only the perpetual servitude of one class was involved, the victory of gold means the bond servitude-of-t- he masses; the bone and smew cf American citizenship. There are two great issues; gold ... and rilverrTheRepublicah parly has declared ' squarely" in favor of gold, and the other great national party, the "Democratic, his announced its intention of fighting for financial' freedom and silver. To merge its identity into some -- should adopt policy.' cf effecting a fusion, with the Palmer-BucknDemocrats, and changing its party colors and name, Democratic victory would be assured. The same is true of Democracy. . Republicans and Populists supported the Democratic banner .in 189G, not in hope of reward, but as a matter of principle. The only hope of future victory lies in fighting it out on the same liue, and no flag can offer such inspiration as the Democratic. ' The Chicago platform is empbatio enough for every silver man to swear by, and the silver plank broad enough for every silver man to stand on. Why should we risk all the advantages gained by standing on it, by a change of front now? ai EAEL & ENGLAND PUEL1SHIE3 CO., tmi JOURNAL, LOUAN, UTAH FEBRUARY Y Uie-uulcid- rCUSHKD BY LESSEE3. TRI-YKEKL- -- nameless, fusion nondescript, party, would be to lose its strength. The issues have been plainly drawn and the line of demarcation is clearly defined. Thousands of Republicans in the Western states voted for Bryan electors; thousands of Democrats In the Eastern states, voted for McKinley, The line of .battle was, and is, so well defined that no change can be effected upon either side without inviting defeat, If the Republican party T?E DON'T THINK- ter by tbe young lady in question, to go into court for the purpose of vindicating their character and punishing their traduc ers. Had his statement been true, he should have been killed for his double crime; first, for ruining his victim, and next, for destroying her reputation. It is too common would-berouewhen practice for in company with boon companions, to boast of deeds they were never able to accomplish, under a bond of secrecy made only to be violated; and there is such a tendency to a, believe evil, rather than good re- ports, that an innocent girls reputation may be blasted beyond hope of redemption, Unless she seeks some such vigorous mode of , redress as that adopted by the ?
