Show THE senatorial the great battle which had for so long been the niah topic of conversation and tho the principal object of public interest inte int iest elest was settled on wednesday evening eveni nR on the fifty third ballot by the clec election tian of the lion joseph L rawlins to the V U Q S senate while THE tae jour aj has fought his election for reasons which have been given full and free expression and while it is still our firm belief that the will of the great majority of the people of utah was not expressed there is still room for congratulation the long continued deadlock dead lock during which it seemed almost impossible for either of the three principal candidates to be elected threatened utah with a possible repetition tion of the heitfeld flasco fiasco in idaho and the election of a dark horse borse who would not be in any sense a creditable representative of the state or the democratic party the election of joseph L rawlins has averted this threatened danger and assured the state and party a representative capable of reflecting honor on both his silver record is all that could bo be desired and his democracy cannot ie e questioned ile he may be depended on to vote on the right V side of ev every ery question every time and now that the inevitable has occurred it is ig the part of wisdom to give him the loyal support of the party aside from his method of entering the race there is but one thing to regret it has not only been whispered but openly charged in joint debate that members of the legislature who had taken a solemn oath to uphold the state constitution which expressly forbids the union of church and state members whose preference for the lion moses thatcher was freely expressed at tho the commencement of the se session stion were led to violate their oaths and the expressed will of their constituents by ecclesiastical dictation A sufficient number of these theae members could be named to have assured his election at puy any time during the clodin closing days of the contestant cont estand particularly after judge henderson was out of the race representative sloan showed part of a letter in which one of the members writing whitin 0 tom to a friend said eaid that he had a duty higher than to the state these suspicions are so well grounded in the minds of the legislator a that they maintain the election could be successfully contested by the defeated candidate the ecclesiastical ever was not sufficiently stron strong to either elect its favorite or cause the desertion from moses th thatcher atcy s ranks of men of the same ecclesiastical body who hold their reli religions zious beliefs dearer than life itself but very properly hold bold that obedience to ecclesiastical authority cannot righteously be ba extended to political matters affecting the state for the sake bake of best interests and prosperity rity we sincerely hope it will not again be attempted |
