The g Little Black Clock said they must begin at once, but for a little while John watched the steamers in the harbor. The ships were from every part of the world. A jinrikisha, or ricksha, soon Vas brought along and they all got in it. x the was new motion had a ride, though delightful They and strange. They saw babies being carried on the backs of mothers. They stopped by a small unpainted house, two stories high, which was held up by gray wooden posts which stood upon stones. They could see right through the house! There was a charcoal fire burning, and before going in they had to take off their shoes. The Little Black Clock told them about Japans coal mines which reached way under the sea, and of one particularly famous one that had fifty miles of tunnels going under the ocean. They were inside the housejiow and were sitting on the floor Outside they could see a lovely garden. How would you like a hot bath? the Little Black Clock asked. It was not John's or Peggys idea of an adventure, and the Little Black Clock noticed from their expressions how they felt Perfectly all right, he said, only when they say hot bath here they mean hot bath. They bathe in wooden tubs which have stovepipes running up through the water at the backs of the tubs. Then you cant be burned as there are pieces of white pine around the pipes to keep them from touching your body. They use such scalding water here. John and Peggy were relieved that the Little Black Clock merely told them this information and were still better pleased when he said, Were going to have a real Japanese meal now, and afterward well have to take a walk in the rain. But its not raining, said John. It will be when we take our walk, said the Little Black a sight-seein- u 1- ThriiDkG CrusCoME-'- , cuiimncv RuEfottt; 1- -4 oven.
