THE NEWSBOYS BETTER CHANCES famous statistician, once made ROGER BAUSON, that the newsboys have a better chance the for success than have college men. Mr. Babson did not perhaps intend that statement to be taken literally, yet it calls attention to a profound truth. Boys who have the initiative to go out and do some active line of work, will accomplish more in the world than many of the fellows who are trying to make a success through some form of influence not accomplished by their own efforts. Newsboys are not the only youngsters who show initiative. Any boy who sets out in a determined way to earn money to contribute tohis own support, or to obtain education, shows qualities that are bound to carry him a good way if he keeps showing this spirit. If he is trying to earn money simply so fie can spend it more freely, that is a different thing. It js a fine thing for a boy to go into athletics, and win place on the football or baseball or track team of his school. H,e too is showing initiative, a disposition to get out of the ordinary rut. But there is this difference between the young athlete and the young money earner. The latter has a keener conception of the main issues of life. He sees farther into the future. The gains made on the football field are helpful in many ways. But much of the power a boy gains in such athletics is only a side issue on the main objects of life. The enterprising money earning boy who peddles newspapers, helps in stores, or does one of a hundred things that live boys can do it Logan, has grasped at his early age the rious-purposes that do not ordinarily inspire the boys until years later when they get married and have families to support. Starting so early on the path to success, the newsboy and others like him have a superior chance to do well in the world. -se- v t YOUR INCOME TAX X FIFTEEN NUMBER Chapter 18 METAMORPHOSIS ITH her latchkey Enid let her sell Into Martha Debblnat house and, running along the hall, entered the small living and work room that connected with her bed room, She turned on the light and pulled open the drawer of her desk where she kept the reserve supply of ammunition for her pistol. The typewriter, the pile of manuscript, the odds and ends, the telephone onthe desk that she had bad when she had come to live hre, the photographs of her father and mother on the mantelpiece were all just as she bad left them. Correctly to compute this Credit, the taxpayer first must compute the amount of tax which, would be payable without the eamed-incom- e credit and from this amount 25 per cent is to be deducted, the balance being the amount of tax due. Earned income is defined as wages, salaries, professional fees, and other amounts received as compensation for personal services actually rendered. However, all net income up to $5,000, whether actually earned or not, is considered earned income for the purpose " of this credit, A taxpayer may have received in 1929 a salary of $3,500 ana ' from a real estate transaction a net profit of $1,500. Nevertheless, the entire $5,000 is considered as earned income. Following is an example of how a taxpayer, unmarried and with no dependents, should compute his tax on a net income of $5,000: ........ ............... ........... ... ... $500000 Net income - tj Thursday, February 20, 1930.
