All Night Long Eager Throng Awaited Arrival of Colum-- hia Passengers. July 24. All throng await- Astoria, Oregon, night long an eager ed on the docks for the steamer the arrival of George W. Elder, on board many of the survivors of the Columbia, which was sunk in a collision with the steam schooner San Pedro near Shelter Cove, Cal., early Sunday morning. Hundreds of people, relatives and friends of the survivors, came from Portland and various towns in Ore-So-n and Washington to greet tbeir loved ones. Patiently they "waited on the docks ' throughout be night, huddled in groups, their faces illumined with happi-Bes- s and chatting happily on the bunion of the morrow. The scene, however, was not without its sorrow. Here and there an expectant wife, a loving father, a brother or a sister hop-- 8 against hope, sail huddled and disconsolate. They were waiting for nev3 of the missing, perhaps f the dead. It was the presence of the bereaved that held the throngs in check and here and er some man or woman more thoughtful of the rest, endeavor-t- o console those poor folk hose eyes scanAed the sea so 'ously for a glimpse of, the hich had ill-fat- Elder. At . . . last he look-ou- t at Ham-,t&on- d Astoria telephoned in to that the Elder was off the bar at 4:45 o'clock another mes- - ONLY most inside. A great cheer greeted the news and the watchers began pacing up and down the pier, nervously scanning the harbor to catch a glimpse of the steamer When at last the Elder finally, was discerned in the glow of the early morning there was cheer after cheer. Hundreds of people from all parts of ithe city were added to the expectant crowds Long before the Elder was within earshot people on the docks began a fusilade of questions, hut it was useless.' Iti was not long, however, be fore people on the dock recognized or thought (they could recognize their loved ones and the ex citement grew more tense and demonstrative. The scene on the Elder was perhaps even more animated, Crowds, of eager people were gathered on the decks and a long row of happy faces shown over the rail. Hats were waved an-the cheers of the rescued mingled with the watehers on shore Shouts of greeting went back and forth as the Elder came up to her dock, and cries of "now are yout and "Are you al right! were punctuated now anc then with the cry of a mother or father appealing for news of a loved one. There were pitiful scenes when it) was learned that ithe Elder had picked up none of the Columbias lifeboats or rafts. All hope ha departed for some and they slipped away from the merry-maketo hide their sorrow as best they might. It was only too true the Elder had not sighted any of (the missing rafts or boats and hac picked up pone of the victims after leaving Eureka. There were some who had fitted out, in Eureka, but it was not difficult) to recognize the survivors of the Columbia disaster. The scene of the dock is almost beyond words. Every possible demonstration of joy was unpent and the hugging and kissing continued for many minutes. Some few were overcome by the excitement of the meeting and some women fainted but were 60on revived. Some of the rescued were carried off by their friends and those among ithe rescued who were not greeted by friends were taken care of and made welcome by the good people of Astoria.
