the best advice for stopping the West Nile virus is still to lather up with mosquito repellent or stay indoors But that could change At least two companies and the government are planning tests on potential vaccines over the next three years One study is already under way and the government test will begin this summer Jim Meegan a virology program officer with the Nationallnstitutes of Health in Bethesda Md said research suggests there- is at least one drug waiting to be found that will protect people from the mosquito-born- e virus West Nile virus infected nearly 10000 people nationwide last year and was responsible for 262 deaths according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Colorado led the way with 2947 of 9858 overall cases and 61 of the deaths While healthy people often fight off infection those with weak immune systems can develop severe fever or potentially fatal brain inflammations from the disease Seventy universities and hospitals throughout the United States and Canada will participate in a study this summier that will use antibodies from people who fought off the disease and inject them into people who are infected The goal is to attack the virus once it enters the body relieving the painful and debilitating symptoms The NIH imported the drug from Israel which has been dealing with West Nile virus for decades The drug is common in that country but has not been through a full study against West Nile virus Meegan expressed reservations that the drug would be able to reach the virus once it is in a patient's brain “These antibodies don’t cross the blood-brai- n barrier very well and these cases have severe of many he said encephalitis" ‘ An experimental treatment tested on a handful of people last year in nearby Boulder nas been shelved as - drug maker AVI BioPharma of Port- land Ore shifts its focus to address more widespread diseases such as ' hepatitis C “Certainly with internal resources we feel it’s our responsibility to go after the bigger fish in thepond company President Alan Timmins said Nancy Foster 52 participated in the study after contracting the virus while gardening She was in a hospital bed for nearly three weeks suffering from meningitis and encephalitis before she was given the drug “After I had been there about four days I went from being a vegetable back to talking back to being myself back to understanding what was going on in the world” Foster said She credited the drug with saving her life The study of just 1 1 patients was not enough to truly evaluate the drug but Nelson Gantz chief of infectious diseases at Boulder Community Hospital said stopping development is another in a series of missteps by companies that focus on the bottom line instead of treatment City-base- Lead
