Republicans are traditionally the party of the rich the party of big business Democrats have always been known as the party of the common person the guy who makes ends meet who might like to hunker down to a steaming bowl of homemade chili Cache County has voted Republican for as long as most people can remember and the party says it still has a lock on favored by Cache County voters in local state and national races again Tuesday and the Democrats didn't even bother fielding a candidate for the only state Senate race on the ballot But April Johnson said the club's goal is to sign up 200 to 300 paying Republicans are Democratic Party activists say the local political landscape is beginning to show some subtle changes Political insiders say the charge of the Democrats is fueled from two fronts: A renewed effort to make it a year-roun-d party and a changing population “A lot of people have moved in in the last six years with new nontraditional ideas said Beth Hendricks president of Cache County Republican Women “Whether that carries them out of the Republican Party I don’t know” The other side thinks it members and the have resources to recruit candidates throughout the year “The Republicans have had a free ride for too long” Hendricks if anything sides with her Democratic foe on the notion that signs of Democratic life and changing demograph- might “There is a perceived notion that you are a Republi- can in this county” said Dell Johnson chairman of the Big y CD Club “We need a system in Cache Wiley” two-part- ics could threaten CD stands for Cache Democrats and the Big CD Club is a new effort to keep the minority party functioning with money d and candidates So far the club has signed up 60 members at $60 a throw and organized a monthly newsletter it sends to about 850 people if not loosen that Republican grip “The biggest problem the Cache County Republican Party has is that they think they year-roun- have it” Hendricks said “If they don’t continue to have good people for candidates they are going to find themselves out of office” Hendricks said Republicans in Cache County have capitalized in part on voter apathy “We’ve just gone dormant between elections” said Johnson who lives in Avon and who helped start the club last SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Brigham City police officer has been charged with a misdemeanor weapons confrontaoffense following an off-dution with another lawman Robert Michael Keone 28 is accused in charges filed last week of taking the -
