Show I 15 The Herald Journal Logan Utah Thursday February Other views Berry's World The Wall Street Journal If President Clinton wants to gel Dr (Henry) Foster confirmed as surgeon general the best move he could make would be to invite Pat Robertson to the White House for a talk or maybe a prayer They'd probably both benefit but we suspect it’s the president who has the most to learn — namely a little respect for people who are deeply against abortion For underlying the White House mistakes on the Foster nomination is one unthinking assumption: that views is anyone with not serious and can safely be ignored Abortion is the most contentious moral issue splitting the nation today we all have to live and together alike and at the very least we ought to be able to learn to agree to disagree It would be very unfortunate if the ultimate lesson of the Foster nomination is that no one who has ever performed an abortion can ever hold any political office and that is precisely where the passions on both sides anti-aborti- pro-choic- cr pro-lif- er seem to be leading And on its whole than rather judged isolated incidents Foster’s career has much to recommend it It’s clear that he doesn't believe that the best defense against teen pregnancy is condoms in the schools or masturbation classes All parties — Foster the White House the Religious Right — stand to lose in the raucous debate that has developed It this is the Middle East Peace Process what would happen if there would be a "If Middle East WAR Process?" I used to carry around in my pocket a list of 21 people who were entitled to be considered possible candidates for the honor But the list has dwindled at a breathtaking rate and now only a handful of names arc left Worse yet there is no Goldwatcr or Reagan among them who commands the instant allegiance of the entire conservative movement (which in the party’s present mood would be tantamount to nomination) In the corridors at the Shore-hamost of the conservatives I spoke to were edging toward Sen Phil Gramm They like his positions on almost all subjects They do worry about how well he will do in next year’s presidential primaries outside the South which they assume he will sweep (When I remarked in a recent column m that Gramm’s heavy Southern accent is a problem I got several letters from Southerners denouncing me as a bigot but I was simply noting a political fact of life: People find it easier to support candidates they can personally identify with) A major plus for Gramm is the size of his war chest which is huge When the candidates start scrambling for voles in next POOR COPY Senate District 24 (Box Elder Cache counties) — John P Holmgren River City PO Box 208 Bear River Republican primary voters have historically had a soft spot for candidates who tried before and lost (Dewey Nixon Reagan and Bush) Finally Dole’s own war chest is impressive too if not as big as
