gains of at least seven governorships — winning GOP-hel- d offices in Alaska Texas Arkansas Nebraska Minnesota Michigan Nevada Ohio and Wisconsin They had a chance at winning an eighth in Illinois while losing only in California and New Hampshire The standing early today of governor Stevenson of Illinois sought to pull off another shocker in a tense race with Gov James Thompson a possible presidential candidate In a race that went down to the last 5 percent Deukmejian pulled ahead of Los Angeles Mayor Bradley at 6:30 am EST and was assured of an upset victory with Thomas Bradley bound George Wallace took advantage of Alabama’s heavy Democratic vote to easily recapture the governor's mansion and former Democratic Gov Bill Clinton of Arkansas returned to power In Illinois Stevenson watched his 100000 vote lead over heavily favored Gov Jim Thompson disappear Thompson built a 33000-vot- e lead with 95 percent of precincts counted at dawn today However some 300 Chicago area Presidential suite of the Ogden Hilton Stephen Dirks' supporters watched Republican James V Hansen via television give his Salt Lake City victory speech shortly after 11 pm Tuesday It was the same room where President Ronald Reagan spent the night two months ago when he campaigned for Utah Republicans in Hooper Both incumbent First District US Congressman Hansen and challenger Dirks said it was if the President never left Both agreed perhaps for the first time in their campaign the President played a key role in Hansen’s overwhelming victory margin “I think this is a ratification of the President’s policies” said Hansen Tuesday night from his log cabin headquarters in Farmington before accepting victory “I think we came up with some positive solutions The other people just criticized" Dirks Mayor of Ogden for nearly a decade would not officially concede defeat until this morning but did say Reagan aided in the large percentage gap between himself and the incumbent “I think a lot of it has to do with the personal popularity of President Reagan” said Dirks just before leaving his headquarters for the night He said the President’s two trips to Utah and the slick localized television commercials for Senator Orrin Hatch played a part in his defeat Even Dirks’ Democratic supporters who gathered with him on the seventh floor suite were fascinated with the room the bed the bathroom where the President had stayed "So this is the bed the President slept in” said one woman to no one in particular as she stumbled into the bedroom Hansen who is expected to pick up 63 percent of the vote said the American people were a positive lot and borrowed Reagan’s now familiar phrase saying “They voted for their dreams not their fears” He admitted too that it helped to be on the same team as Ronald Reagan “The President has got his foundation in and the foundation is the important thing” said Hansen Although the “President's team” didn't do as well nation-wid- e Hansen was quick to point out that it is typical for the party of the President to lose power in a election He predicted a Republican landslide in 1984 “I personally feel that by 1984 (Reaganomics will have worked) and this country will really be swinging I think the Republicans will strongly take the Senate and maybe carry the house” said Hansen Dirks said those promises of recovery had better be true or the Republican party will have done the American people a great disservice “The slogan 'Stay the course’ better produce or the Republican party is going to have great difficulty" said Dirks who added he was happy with the way he ran his campaign and denied Hansen's claim that he simply criticized and Weather i didn’t propose solutions to the country’s problems In the end it was Stephen Dirks who failed to articulate the issues well enough he said but added that “it simply was not true” that he didn’t attempt to present viable alternatives to Reaganomics Dirks looking tired from the campaign pace said he was not sure about his future but indicated there was a “strong possibility” he would not seek reelection as Mayor of Ogden I’ve served for nearly a decade as mayor” explained Dirks “It’s a part-tim- e job and it takes a lot of sacrifice and I’ve got a wife and a baby to think about now" Always the Best For Less 24 HOURS Thun Fri Rain Mailed rivers end caused flooding near
