Show Logan Utah Sunday November Business council opposes two Utaii tax initiatives Utah Council of Small Business president David L Tomlinson this week announced the business association's position on four constitutional propositions and two initiative proposals which will appear on the November 4th ballot Tomlinson said that the Council polled its members regarding the Executive Article Revision the Revenue and Tax Article Revision the Prisoner Work Release Amendment and the Compensation of Legislators proposal and that all four have the group's approval "Small business at least from our viewpoint should favor all four propositions and we are encouraging our members and subscribers to do so'' Tomlinson said "We cannot however support the two Initiative proposals Pro "— : Future made up elsewhere and would result in hardship for small grocers who would have to contend with a dual tax system since the proposal does not address the problem of local option sales taxes He said that the argument that the sales tax on food is "regressive" doesn't hold water when the tax is considered as part of the State's total tax structure 752-950- Steven Uo owner of the New Grand View claims could increase Deaths and injuries in traffic crashes can be expected to in- crease substantially as the trend toward small cars grows according to Western In- surance Information Service (WIIS) More than 80 percent of the new cars now being purchased are sized smaller than traditional full size models and 85 percent of the fatalities in crashes Involving subcompacts with larger cars occur to the small car occupants It amounts to a tradeoff of fuel conservation for increased deaths and injuries according to WIIS One might that even- speculate tually If the current trend of small car popularity continues practically all cars will be small so the problem of small car car will disappear Not so WHS says Even small cars of current design colliding with each other result in more deaths and Injuries because of the lack of protection and the closeness of occupant to strucvs big ture WHS Additionally points out a high percentage of crashes are single car collisions with fixed objects Another factor is that trucks will always be a significant part of traffic flow and there is little likelihood that they will get smaller WHS notes that Ben Kelley senior vice president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety expresses concern about the nation’s wholesale move to unsafe but small cars “We’re trading fuel-efficie- nt blood for oil As things now stand we are going to pay for our savings in oil with thousands and thousands of deaths American and hundreds of thousands of human injuries” Washington the DC safety executive said at a Community Traffic Safety Forum luncheon held Sept 3 in Glendale Calif More than 50000 people died in traffic accidents in the United States last year Kelley likens this figure to the death toll that might result if a fully loaded jetliner were to crash at a major airport every day for one year Can anything be done to improve the ability of autos to withstand crashes and reduce the large-scal- e destruction of life and property on the nation's highways? Assuredly yes according to Kelley It is possible to build a energy-efficielightweight highly styled car that can crash into a wall at 50 mph and allow the front-sepassengers to walk away without death or he serious injury claims nt at liii'imn' Albright We’re voting AGAIN ST Initiatives A and B Join Us!
