LAKE CITY (UPI) — Utahns have two incumbent congressmen — Democrat Gunn McKay and Republican Dan Marriott and put the GOP in control of both houses of the State Legislature for the first time in four years Salt Lake County voters Tuesday also rejected a highly controversial proposal to combine Salt Lake City and County a move that would have iovernments of the state's capitol city The Republican rout in the Legislature ousted many veteran Democrats including Sen Ernest Dean who was a lawmaker for 20 years and is the only man in state history to serve as both President of the Senate and Speaker of the House He was defeated by William Jones chairman of the board of Intermountain Health Care Inc McKay of Huntsville won a fifth term in - - University debate coach Jed Richardson the Republican challenger in Utah's First District McKay won 51 percent of the vote to Richardson's 46 percent according to unofficial results compiled by the Utah Election Service It was the congressman's smallest victory margin since he was first elected in 1970 By contrast McKay had 57 percent of the vote in 1976 and 62 percent in had proved McKay was not invincible Richardson vowed to try again and accused the Democrat of sidestepping his voting record during debates In the Second District Republican incumbent Dan Marriott trounced Democrat Ed Firmage a University of Utah law professor and former aide to Vice President Hubert Humphrey Marriott won 61 percent of the vote to Firmage's 36 1974 "We were more afraid of Richardson than other opponents" said the wno spent three
