Show Logan Utah Sunday Feb 6 Football Escalation By Chuck Mills Hie eleventh game is more fuel on the fire “The rich get rich etc” as the old adage goes The idea of the football game addition was to increase revenue and bite into football losses it won’t work that way for college football A few will gain but each college will not aid their cause College athletic costs have rocketed up just as every other item in our society It isn’t excessive or unique but costs are racing past income Each u athletics and university has a certain though the profit margin shrinks the standard of this remains the same If a athletic program cuts back or stays with the status-qu- o then they had better cut back and play at a level that matches their program with that of the opponents If the eleventh game is the answer then it should be played during a present open weekend or at the end of the season The trend now seems to play it a week earlier than the usual opening weekend What does that do? College is open players must give up their summer jobs a week earlier the program must house feed and supply this squad a week longer and in the the squad is larger in numbers out who will drop in a week or ten because many are days will make Hie few large successful money-make$100000 or more on this game so the extra week’s expenses mean little But the university team that would be anxious to increase their income by just $20000 may lose nearly twenty percent of that amount in the extra week of practice Differences Increased The “major major’s” will make a large amount of money the major universities without the superg will make a reasonable income and amount So the measure of difference is increased and not narrowed Some universities who are major college will hope to play one of the wealthy football schools in their terrain in the hope for a “big pot” for their budget In this case it will happen on occasion but in most cases the “haves will play other haves" on a home and home basis where both will make much money both years (Penn State took home $350000 from the Orange Bowl alone) Somewhere the college coaches and interested informed (not reform) authorities must move to make specific control of athletic costs Many coaches myself among them feel a definite step is the limit of athletic grants That isn’t a case erf spending more in the hope of making more What is a reasonable number? A national limit would be reasonable to allif not to all’s liking Say one hundred! Penn StateinSyracuse West Virginia Pitt and a few other dependents operate on that number But the average in major college football and the major conferences r"TUns from 120 to 180 for football In fact a few years ago a major independent had 210 football players on sdudarship There is no reason a grant program can’t operate on 100 grants If we use the average of 140 for grants in major college football and we set a limit of 100 then we have a concrete saving of about $80000 in educational costs plus saving in equipment needed and other such items If limited to that number then there would also be more players available to colleges to attract It isn't an uncommon practice for a wealthy athletic school to put a boy on aid though he will never play for them But he is good enough that they don't want to play against him life-sty- life-sty- le le pre-seaso- n rs pre-seas- on -
