Show ' ' Take the American Journey na-ti- on For a motor trip of enjoyment and enrichment visit our national shrines where men made history and nature made wondrous beauty mm By LUTHER H HODGES S Secretory of Commerce U est our homes or we can travel to Washington to begin it Every American should visit our capital at least once in his lifetime The shrines to our past can be found in every section of the Travel the "American Journey" to President Johnson's home state of Texas and visit the Alamo at San Antonio At this cradle of Texas liberty 184 Texans under Colonel William Barrett Travis fought to the last man against 1000 Mexican besiegers in 1836 Davy Crockett and Colonel James Bowie were among those who fell Take the "American Journey" farther west to some of the natural wonders of our country where freedom lives in the beauty of the land Go to the rim of the fabulous Grand Canyon or to magnificent Mount Rainier Travel to the in- - vis- A ited me in Washington recently and I took him on tour of the points of interest We ended up at the Lin-coMemorial the summer tourists were still streaming into this great marble temple even though it was late in the evening ln friend glanced around- - at the crowd and turned to me "Tell me" he asked "do your na- My tional shrines draw an unusually m vv' P : i 3 ?1 Vr'eXM y 1 man-ma- t ksattNisl i4Wix0(m large number of visitors during a Presidential election year?" "No I don't think so" I said "No more than usual" But he gave me an idea Many more of us should visit them at a time so important to our nation They give us a perspective on our past that can aid us in our future —this year and every year Again and again we hear the words "freedom" "equality" "justice" and "liberty" But what do these words really mean? Where can we rediscover the true meaning of the democratic concepts on which this nation was founded? Dictionaries and history books are helpful But we need a personal experience to tell us — not just more words Where else can we recapture these meanings than at the national shrines that perpetuate their spirit and purpose? So against this background I would like to make a proposal: that periodically we take what we might call the "American Journey" a special pilgrimage to the shrines both and natural that perpetuate our national heritage V Where should we start the "American Journey"?
