Critics of the setup as established by the Censu3 Bureau point out that the canvassers are straying a long way from the simple constitutional provision which provides for nothing more complicated than counting heads. They wouldn't mind a few of the questions that census takers intend to ask citizens, but they think Uncle Sam is going a little too far when he sets out to discover intimate details about family life. Even then, they might not howl quite so loudly if there were any assurance that the information garnered would be kept strictly confidential. But they fail to see how anyone can reasonably expect some tens of thousands of census takers to keep juicy tidbits of neighborhood interest under their hats. But look at the Census Bureaus viewpoint: Theoretievery scrap of information gathered will be as confidential and as sacred as the secret ballot. Questions are not designed to embarrass housewives, nor to snoop purposelessly into private matters. All thats wanted is more data on American life than has ever been collected before with a view toward establishing a rich fund of statistics cally, on resources. How can social and economic advances be brought about, they ask, unless the people interested know to what extent change is needed? How can America know what America needs unless exhaustive and authoritative figures are on file? Whatever questions are finally approved for submission to the populace, chances are there wont be much trouble so long as the canvassers remain courteous. Residents have a right to expect Uncle Sams representative to be at least as considerate as a shoestring peddler. The reason James Roselli, the Kenosha, Wis., shoe repairman, refused to answer questions in a preliminary survey, he told authorities, after his arrest, was that the census man wasnt polite. The great majority of citizens will want to cooperate. They will expect the census takers to do the same. Seismographs show that each rise of the tide bends the coastline downward for several miles inland. The worst earthquake ever recorded occurred in China during 1556. Yea, the injustice, malice, cruelty, stupidity and blindness of humanity are amply demonstrated every day of the world. One person is jealous of another, and would do all in his power to bring misfortune to his fellow. By the same morality, one nation is jealous of another, covets possessions of its neighbor, and when it feels itself strong enough, marches an army invasionward. Humanity's egoism is crass; its deoeitfulness and cowardice constitute our everyday experience.
