Although convinced that fatalities from last nights terrific series of earth shocks will increase, authorities believed there mav he some duplications in the identification of the known dead. Long Beach, chief center of death and damage, counted GO dead, 50 identified. In nearby Compton, where the business district was virtually demolished, 17 were dead. Los Angeles had 10 dead and like all other communities, scores of injured. The task of caring for homeless and injured was coordinated with emergency repair work to disrupted utilities, including broken telephone, power and water lines. Virtual martial law prevailed in Long Beach, with sailors and marines from the United States fleet anchored off shore impressed for patrol service. With fixed bayonets, the guards kept streets clear for rescue and repair crews, meanwhile acting to prevent looting attempts. Next to the three cities with heavy death tolls, Hunting-to- n Park, located between Los Angeles and Long Beach, was the hardest hit. Nine were known dead. LOS ANGELES, Mar. 11 Many Cache Valley people were today awaiting anxiously for word fiom relatives ana friends In the stricken earthquake area in and around Los Angeles. Wird bad been reported at noon from only two sources. LoJoseph Newbold, gan man now living in Huntington Park, just outside Los Angeles, called his daughter, Mrs. O. A. Sonne, late Friday, telling her of the earthquake and reassuring her of the safety of himself and Mrs. Newbold. He said that their home was rocked several times, that dishes were knocked from the shelves and broken but thnt no personal Injuries were received. TREMORS ROCK AUTOMOBILE Mrs. Mae Musser, owner of the Shirley Mae shop in Logan but wintering in California, called Manager Hyrum Arnold at the store here this morning, telling of the disaster. She too, was out of the severest zone but nevertheless, the shocks were severe euuiiga to rock her car in a driveway adjoiUni the house. President G. W. Lindquist and family were waiting anxiously for word, not received at noon today, from children in Los Angeles. Mrs. Frank and Irving and Ariel Lindquist are all living in Los Angeles while Mrs. G. COMMUNICATION well-kno- (UP) The earthquake damage southern California Friday evening is estimated at more than ten million dollars. At least 122 persons have been killed in the disaster. Long Beach officials express the fear that the number of dead will greatly increase as soon as rescue crews can get DIFFICULT into the debris filled streets of that city. Sailors from the Mr. Dewsnup is seriously ill Pacific fleet which was maneuvering along the California and today, the Lindquists were atcoast are now patrolling the danger zones of the stricken tempting to get word through to Los Angeles but in communities. The 29 stories high city hall in Los Angeles, the tallest building in southern California, is closed pending a survey to determine whether or not the building was damaged by quake. It rocked visibly during the shocks. Many of the dead are unidentified, and addresses of many others are lacking. At noon today no Utah persons were among the known dead. It is estimated that more than 20,000 former Utah residents now reside in the Los Angeles section. Many have homes in Long Beach, Compton, and Huntington Park, where the greatest damage was done by the tremors. Several babies were born during the shock. Among them was Betty Lou, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Boying-to- n of Long Beach. No one will ever know Betty Lous birth weight. As nurses were weighing the new born child in the basement of the hospital falling debris smashed the scales narrowly missing the babe. Fred C. Porter, prominent Chicago sportsman, and two companions burned to death when an airplane in which they had ascended to view the quake crashed in flames. Heavy fog is held responsible for the crash. LEGION SUPPORTS ROOSEVELT WORK telegraph and telephone lines were reported so choked up with the extra burden that communication was next Parley Hansen, a mailcarrier for the Logan postoffice, now taking his month's furlough, was reported in Long Beach, the scene of the worst of the disaster on Thursday. A card from him and Mrs. Hansen was received at the postoffice Friday. It had been mailed Thursday. Whether he got out of the city before the trouble started is not known. Others from Logan almost to numerable to mention are now residing In Los Angeles. No further word had been received here, according to latest reports. Huntington Park, where the principal Mormon colony in Los Angeles is found, is directly in the path of the earthquake.
