Show 4— The Herald Journal Logan Utah Tuesday February 26 1985 Report: Hunger in America an epidemic BOSTON (UPI) — Hunger in America is a sweeping epidemic affecting as many as 20 million people that can be stopped if only the federal government finds the “political will" to allocate enough money to food programs a new study says “Hunger has returned to our nation primarily due to governmental failure" said the report of the Physician Task Force on Hunger in America prepared at Harvard University’s School of Public Health The task force called on Congress to strengthen the food stamp program build up school meal and other food programs tor children and similar programs for the elderly The findings are contained in a report called “Hunger In America: The Grow 147-pa- ge The Logan High School took the Sweepstakes Trophy at the State Drill Team Chamand three Cache pionships Valley girls were named to the Hi-L- os 3-- A team during the All-Sta- te competition in Bountiful Satur- day Kim Andrews and Mary Boylance of Logan High School hnd Tina Bullen of Sky View High School were selected to the 10-gi- rl All-Sta- te The Hi-L- os team competed in three events and placed first in both the dance and prop events In the novelty event the team finished second Peggy Bates the team advisor said the Hi-L- os practiced up to three hours a day during the season and the long hours paid off Saturday “All of the hard work they put in prior to' this event showed in Saturday’s performance” she said The win marked the first “It is time to stop responding to hunger by cutting children’s school lunches" the report said “It is time to show more compassion for hungry families than by reducing their food stamps even as they become poorer “And it is time to set aside compassionate platitudes and political rhetoric about how loving a people we are Let us feed the hungry of our nation" For the study teams of doctors visited spots “We cannot maintain that we lack the resources to end hunger when numerous other Wfeather Eames’ defamation lawsuit against Logan Mayor Newel Daines has been appealed to the Utah Supreme Court for the second time since August of Doug 1983 The appeal follows a dismissal of the suit in November by First District Court Judge VeNoy Christoff er sen the second time Christoffersen had thrown out the suit which seeks a total of 880 million in damages Eames is alleging Daines defamed him in the process of firing him from his post as Logan Pails Director in June of 1982 The suit was originally filed eight months later Eames also filed a similar suit in federal court alleging a civil rights violation on the part of the city in the firing The federal suit names the same defendants — the mayor Logan City and a WEST VALLEY CITY Utah -
